While my translations retain the meaning, style and tone of your text, they do not sound like translations. A good translation sounds like an original text written by a native speaker and writer. The cultural concepts should also be clear and intelligible to the readers of a different culture. I translate from French into English and from English into French. There are two levels of work to consider: proofreading and copy-editing. A proofreader looks out for any typographical errors, spelling, syntax...

Enter your email address to receive notifications of new posts. No Blind Quotes, No Surprises. Translation being a customised service by nature, a translator cannot give an estimation let alone a quotation before seeing the document. They may give their hourly rate, but how many hours will be necessary still depends on the document. Clients sometimes assume that the number of pages is enough for a translator to. Avoid surprises: send your document with every quotation request. Click to share on Google (O...

Enter your email address to receive notifications of new posts. Author Archives for Karine. It sometimes takes more than translation for a project to be understood abroad. Understanding your reader’s culture is equally important. A translator may be able to make you aware of cultural issues in your text, but your marketing team needs to do its homework too. Enter your email address to receive notifications of new posts. Discounts for Large Volumes? From the client’s point of view, asking for a reduced rate on the basis of a large volume of work (several weeks’ worth) may seem like a fair request. The project manager insisted: But it’s quantity! Three weeks is a lot of work! You are comment...

A Linguist's Colourful Perspective. The Tanks’ Aura. Last April, I finally visited the Tanks at Tate Modern and came back enthralled. When some thought that the ubiquitous plain white cubic space of art galleries could not be stripped down to a more minimalist decor, Tate tears the plaster-and-paint flesh from the walls, exposing the bare stout bones of its foundations. A Linguist's Colourful Perspective. For those who like sounds, accents and/or languages and have 5 minutes for a bit of fun, here is a little game where you listen to eight short recordings and must guess what language it is from a choice of two or three each time.
