Mealey's Miscellany: March 2010
http://marymodern.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Think of all the people we'll love who haven't been born yet.". Wednesday, March 31, 2010. I'm leaving for Yaddo. What I'm packing: a copy of Mary Modern. For the Yaddo library, some Petty Magic. If I can get some good photos (and permission, when needed) I’ll be sure to post them (after 4pm! And in the meantime this thing is set to auto-blog: more photos from Eastern Europe, great books, and some random nerdy stuff. Tuesday, March 30, 2010. Eastern Europe retroblog: Bucharest. Can't help it.). We watche...
Mealey's Miscellany: Home from Peru!
http://marymodern.blogspot.com/2010/08/home-from-peru.html
Think of all the people we'll love who haven't been born yet.". Monday, August 30, 2010. Welp, I'm back. It was such a fantastic trip that I felt none of the usual 'I've been gone long enough, I'll be glad to get home again.' I just feel melancholy. Jill and Kate on the Amazon. So here are some random highlights—I won't start blogging in earnest until next weekend, when I get to download Kate's pictures. It vants to suck your blood. This is what happens when you fall asleep in the taxi. I only wish I was.

Think of all the people we'll love who haven't been born yet.". Saturday, July 24, 2010. Blurbs and other fun stuff. Fun book stuff is starting to happen! Recently got a couple of lovely blurbs from two of my favorite authors:. A charming curiosity shop of a novel, packed to bursting with secret histories and glittering marvels. With Petty Magic. Camille DeAngelis has given us a glimpse into a strange and enchanting world. It's dangerous good fun, and well worth getting lost in. 8212; Jedediah Berry.
Mealey's Miscellany: Adventures in Peru: North of Lima, part 1
http://marymodern.blogspot.com/2010/09/adventures-in-peru-north-of-lima-part-1.html
Think of all the people we'll love who haven't been born yet.". Thursday, September 9, 2010. Adventures in Peru: North of Lima, part 1. One of the ruins at Caral, a city over four thousand years old. Anyway, we visited five pre-Incan archaeological sites on the first part of the trip: Caral. The oldest city in the Americas; Sechin. The home of a warlike culture dating between 1800 and 900BC; Chan Chan. The largest adobe city ever built; Huaca de la Luna. Sechin was a much smaller site, and we were able t...
Mealey's Miscellany: December 2009
http://marymodern.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
Think of all the people we'll love who haven't been born yet.". Thursday, December 24, 2009. When baking a pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving, I found I had some dough and filling left over. I took out a muffin tin and baked a few miniature pies, which turned out really well, so I made them again for our Christmas Eve shindig. I used the pumpkin pie recipe from Domestic Sluttery. Plus a dash of a few extra spices—cardamom, nutmeg, and cloves), and my favorite pie crust (from A Platter of Figs. These would make...

Anything & Everything: September 2008
http://panopticview.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html
Editorials, critiques, and otherwise searingly important comments from a young woman of innumerable opinions. Things Mothers Should Never Say. Me: God, I hate D.C. sometimes. Me: Too small. And apparently there's something about me that attracts homeless and drunken men. Me: Homeless men keep hitting on me on the subway! Today this guy came up to me and said, 'Hi, I was just wondering, would you like to have dinner with me sometime? Mom: Well, Laura, everybody has needs. Random Thought of the Day. Death ...

Editorials, critiques, and otherwise searingly important comments from a young woman of innumerable opinions. Good lord, has it really been over two months? You've got to love the way the time just flies by between Thanksgiving and Single's Awareness Day . oops, I mean Valentine's Day. Especially when the interim involves, besides the usual holiday festivities, the inauguration of the first African American president in the country. I have employment again! Yes, I know it's supposed to be the other way a...

Editorials, critiques, and otherwise searingly important comments from a young woman of innumerable opinions. Okay, I admit it. When I was a kid, I watched 'Saved By the Bell.' And I thought Zack Morris was highly date-able. Then again, I was eight. Sixteen years later, flipping between CNN and 'The Today Show', I run across the SbtB College Years series finale: the Zack/Kelly wedding! Amazing the thoughts that run through your head when you've just woken up and haven't had caffeine yet. 7) 'The Best Yea...

Editorials, critiques, and otherwise searingly important comments from a young woman of innumerable opinions. For Spring Break this year, the Goldring program (minus a few) went to Ireland, hitting up Dublin and Galway in about eight days. I'm working on chronicling the trip, but a very particular part of the trip stood out to me that I wanted to share. She asked me, and I told her I did. She asked to see it, and I gave it to her, marking for her the page that mentioned her shop. Straight off. Anthony Mi...
Anything & Everything: November 2009

Editorials, critiques, and otherwise searingly important comments from a young woman of innumerable opinions. The World Series is over already? It feels like Opening Day was only a few weeks ago. Or maybe it's just the fact that the weather is exactly like it was on Opening Day that makes it seems so. I seem to have blinked and missed the fall. The trees are bare now, and the cold bites at my cheeks when I step outside. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). My Favorite News Sites. The New York Times. The Nanny Dia...
Anything & Everything: Everybody Chill

Editorials, critiques, and otherwise searingly important comments from a young woman of innumerable opinions. I find it rather amusing everybody seems to be going crazy in fear over the swine flu, especially considering that two weeks ago, nobody had ever even heard of it. Protecting you from this (did nobody thing that this was a great waste of energy, money, and paper? Look at this picture from Getty Images. It's laughable. Skit "I'm not dead! I don't want to go on the cart! Including the 23-month-old ...
