Copenacre Quarry was purchased by the MoWB in 1940 and, following an urgent request for underground storage in 1941, made available to the Navy. The estimated cost to convert the quarry was £192,500, but the Navy demanded the best of everything and within weeks costs had exceeded the agreed budget. In 1972 it was announced that Copenacre was to close, but with a staff of 1,700 this raised concerns. Following a Public Enquiry the depot was retained indefinitely. Drakelow was constructed in sandstone hills near Kidderminster. Estimated costs were £285,000 and construction, which started in June, 1941 was expected to take one year. The underground factory achieved full production in May, 1943 and the final cost was in excess of £1,000,000. From 1955 to 1958 Drakelow was used as a transit store for redundant plant. Between 1958 and 1980 it was a Regional Seat of Government and then a Regional Government Headquarters until 1993 when it was sold off.

Brown's Quarry is a small quarry to the north of Tunnel Quarry. In 1940 it was converted, at great expense, into a secure underground Command Centre for No 10 Group, RAF Rudloe Manor. The Command Centre fell into disuse soon after the war and the control room remained unchanged until the mid 1980s when it was altered for the Controller, Defence Communications. Warren Row, near Henley-on-Thames, was developed for the manufacture of aircraft components. It consists of tunnels fifteen to twenty feet wide and about 600 yards in length. Machine tools and benches were lined up against the left-hand walls leaving narrow walkways to the right. Warren Row was maintained by the Ministry of Supply until 1958 when, during the Cold War, it became a secret, then notorious, Regional Seat of Government. Click on the button below to see Warren Row. Monkton Farleigh Mine is the largest of the three Central Ammunition Depots and consists of 80 acres of tunnels and storage districts. Built during WW2, it was decommissioned in 1965 and sold off in 1976. After many years of fruitless wrangling between landowners and planners, Monkton Farleigh Mine was almost destroyed by theft and vandalism. In 1984 this once Top Secret establishment was rescued by volunteers who launched an ambitious programme to restore the mine and open it to the public.
