Julia in rural Appalachia. Archive for May, 2009. I am saddened to learn today of the passing of Augusto Boal, the creator of Theater of the Oppressed. Augusto, me, Julian Boal. I remember the day that I first learned about Boal and his work. It was the day when I realized that theater could indeed be more than just entertainment, more than just a spectacle. It could be a vehicle for social change. He has been a tremendous inspiration in my life and in the lives of those all over the world.
