I adore baking (cupcakes as of late), love the sun and the beach. I love God, my family, and my job. Middle school is a passion, that's for sure! View my complete profile. My hubby ma...

Socratic Circle- Fundraisers | thenumbertwentyone
https://thenumbertwentyone.wordpress.com/2013/11/17/socratic-circle-fundraisers
Teaching middle school math. November 17, 2013. One of the high points of my year last year was when I did a Socratic Circle. In my class. We used a lesson from Robert Kaplinsky’s website. 8211; by the way, I am so happy to see that recently everyone seems to have found the awesomeness that he has on there, cause it is great! We just completed another Circle this week, although we didn’t use one of his lessons, I’m planning on using a bunch of them during my next unit. I’m trying Box instead of Scr...

Teaching with Borrowed Wisdom: Made it Monday: Divisibility PowerPoint
http://teachingwithborrowedwisdom.blogspot.com/2014/08/made-it-monday-divisibility-powerpoint.html
Monday, August 11, 2014. Made it Monday: Divisibility PowerPoint. I taught the divisibility rules last year, but I don't think the kids really got them. I have had them memorized since fifth grade, but I never understood how they worked. So I did a little internet research. The videos at artofproblemsolving.com finally cleared up the confusion. The Biggest Loser | thenumbertwentyone
https://thenumbertwentyone.wordpress.com/2013/12/02/the-biggest-loser
Teaching middle school math. December 2, 2013. Just a quick post- we started a unit on percents today. Found this activity. From Illuminations, but I needed it to be a little bit more. The activity takes the BMIs and weights of season 14’s contestants and students need to find the percent lost for each in order to find out who won the game. We then had a discussion on why the show does not award the prize to the person with the most weight lost, but the highest percentage. December 3, 2013 at 12:05 am.

Teaching middle school math. Monthly Archives: August 2013. August 24, 2013. If you follow my blog, you know that I have had a pretty busy summer, welcoming twins into our family along with our 2 year old. So my room hasn’t changed much from last year. But thanks to my mom, things are almost all set up and ready to go! Thanks Mom :) Here are some of my favorite things from my room…. This year and I’m not sure how those two things will work together. I will update you🙂. View this document on Scribd.

Surface Area and Volume- Skin and Guts | thenumbertwentyone
https://thenumbertwentyone.wordpress.com/2013/03/21/surface-area-and-volume-skin-and-guts
Teaching middle school math. March 21, 2013. Surface Area and Volume- Skin and Guts. Today we did one of my favorite activities- Skin and Guts. It is from an AIMS book- Effects of Changing Lengths. I love AIMS products and I highly suggest checking them out if you haven’t already. The kids are given nets of 3 rectangular prisms. They create 3 people- One Man, Two Man, and Three Man. I also had one of those great teaching days when I felt like so many connections were made and the kids were working on an ...

Teaching with Borrowed Wisdom: June 2015
http://teachingwithborrowedwisdom.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Thursday, June 18, 2015. 2 years ago, I had Coach come in and talk about sports statistics. I didn't do that last year, but I'll have to make it a priority again- -it was fun for everyone and gave a little non-math-class context for what we were doing. After the cpm materials, I'll use the textbook problems, along with analyzing real data. (Last year, we looked at some stats from the students' home countries. In a fourteen-student class, we had 8 nationalities represented! Labels: first day prep. I'm not...

Shenanigans in 6th-Math: February 2014
http://brummettmath.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Sunday, February 9, 2014. For my tier two kiddos, we begin with memorizing our facts.I strongly believe that is the gateway to mathematics. And once we have a really solid grasp on our multiplication facts, we are ready to work on fractions. And since these kids are at-risk kids, they do not like to sit in their seat, and they especially do not like to do mundane worksheets (and neither would/do I! So, I made these task cards (A-Z! Of multiplying fractions by fractions and fractions by whole numbers.

Shenanigans in 6th-Math: Order of Operations
http://brummettmath.blogspot.com/2014/03/order-of-operations.html
Thursday, March 6, 2014. My sixers are working on Order of Operations. We've only had 20(! Snow days, so that makes it hard to have continuity with instruction. So, my kids definitely need some practice with numerical expressions. They have been cooped up in their houses, so they are needing to get up and move. So, what better time to pull out my Order of Operations Task Cards :). I'm looking forward to this in my classroom! Check it out here. In my TPT store! Labels: Order of Operations. My name is Erin...
