We were taken to the convention center, where we met in a grand ballroom for a breakfast of local dishes - sweet tomato juice, local fruits called tuna, zaxuma, and pitahaya, various cheeses and breads, Mote pillo (boiled corn mixed with eggs and green onions), tamales of chicken and port, sweet plantain cake, coffee and hot chocolate. Equador and the Galapagos 2009. Saturday, May 9, 2009. Guayaquil and the Hacienda. Day 5 - Guayaquil. Next, we did a short tour of the city, then proceeded to our hotels. Ours was the Oro Verde Hotel. It’s a very nice hotel located near the downtown area. There’s a spa here and they offer a 60 minute massage for $36. I might just have to sample on of those! Equador and the Galapagos 2009. Monday, May 4, 2009. Day 1 - Getting to Quito. What a crazy day of flying! Up at 4am before the rooster woke up. Oh the smell of jet fuel in the morning. Pensacola to Dallas (isn’t that in the opposite direction? Then coming all the way back to Miami for our non-stop flight to Quito. Mary Ann was the only one to see a white tipped reef shark, and she and one other person saw a large octopus. There were lots of large starfish along the bottom, and many different colorful fish to see. Everyone had a great time. It was probably one of the best snorkeling sites I’ve ever been on. The hotel gave us a late check out, so we have until 3:00 to rearrange our growing number of possessions and to try to fit everything into our suitcases and carry ons.
