Archive for May, 2014. Oh, it has been a long, brutal winter in Duluth. It started too early and it got too cold and there was too much snow and way too much ice and it just went on for ever and ever. But now spring is here and auction season has returned (for me, I mean, since it never actually went away) and yesterday I picked up my sister Kim at our usual location and we were off to Rice Lake for a day of auction fun. An empty spot in front of the auction venue is always a good sign. Not sure what to ...

Archive for June, 2014. This Week at the Little Free Library. Posted in Books and Libraries. Since the snow’s melted, it’s been a busy time for the Little Free Library. People are dropping off armloads of books, and other people are coming over to borrow them or simply browse. It’s fun to check it out every day and see who’s left what. Can’t seem to keep enough children’s books, which makes me glad. I remember so well the joy of learning to read (even Dick and Jane. And Tip and Mitten. Tender at the Bone.

Archive for September, 2014. The Joy of Delayed Gratification. It’s been a busy month, and a really expensive one, too. Dinners with friends, auctions, gas for road trips, entertaining, veterinary bills, higher car insurance rates you know how it goes. You can plan and budget all you like, but life has a way of intervening in all kinds of ways. And finally the check came, and I rushed over there and pulled off the sales ticket. It was mine! Sometimes it feels good to have to wait for things. In this ...

Archive for October, 2013. Tuesday morning I was working at my computer (working = Solitaire) when I looked up in time to see a very special little face watching me. (And it wasn’t a mouse this time. A bigger face! Can you spot the visitor? I think you can click on the photo to enlarge it. At least that’s how it works on my computer. If it doesn’t on yours, please run out immediately and buy one like mine.). In any case, I hope he comes back soon. Carrots await! Cold Day, Quick Dinner. This isn’t e...

Archive for September, 2013. The Sad Story of Bowe Robert Bergdahl. Posted in Random Thoughts. In an Email message the other day, my friend Quinn commented that probably 95% of Americans know what Kim Kardashian had for dinner, but they have no idea about the situation involving Bowe Bergdahl. My immediate thoughts were this:. 1) She probably had sex for dinner, which seems to be her only claim to fame. 2) Who the heck is Bowe Bergdahl? 8220;Who is the real traitor? 8221; Quinn asks. “I feel it...Surely ...
