Pseudorandom thoughts, mostly on programming and web application development. Thursday, March 15, 2012. Make scheduled jobs in heroku safer for your wallet. I recently checked my current usage on Heroku to find that I had used a much higher than expected number of dyno-hours. The project CheckTheSock.com. Is a RC aviation website that provides some weather data. The forecast data is pulled every hour via FTP by a rake task that is run with a scheduled job in Heroku. Wednesday, February 29, 2012. Rails A/B testing with Split on Heroku. I recently decided to start doing some A/B testing on www.checkthesock.com. Trying something new — Dec 4, 2012.

A niche social network for RC pilots. Built with Ruby on Rails 3.2 uses the asset pipeline in combination with Amazon Cloud Front to keep pages loading fast. Uses Google Maps and Aviation Digital Data Service to display easy to use weather data for different RC airfields. A ruby gem that runs tests with code coverage output and some static code analysis tools. Useful for viewing code coverage and finding code smells.

Pseudorandom thoughts, mostly on programming and web application development. Monday, November 21, 2011. Rescue from temporary fix for rails 3.0 and 3.1. In rails 3.0 and 3.1 rescue from will not successfully rescue a ActionController: RoutingError ( Bug Report. Based on comments in the bug report here is the solution I came up with. A way that handles this bug temporarily and once it is fixed all that needs to be cleaned up is a single line in the routes. First set up a simple errors controller:. Once t...

Pseudorandom thoughts, mostly on programming and web application development. Monday, March 28, 2011. Sitemap testing with doublecheck. I hate releasing a new version of a site and finding out a few days later that I broke some of the pages. So I wrote the Doublecheck gem to help with post release testing. Doublecheck pulls a sitemap file and checks each URL listed, outputing a list of URL's for each HTTP status code that is encountered. Doublecheck http:/ example.com/sitemap.xml. I just released an updated version of Rails Code QA which now supports rails 3.0 and 3.1 as well as ruby 1.8.x and ruby 1.9.x. If you are using ruby 1.8.x all you need to do to install rails code qa in your rails 3.x app is add the following line to your Gemfile. Gem "rails code qa". Require 'simplecov' SimpleCov.start 'rails'. Rails Code QA also runs flog. I decided to try usi...

I just tracked down and dealt with an issue I was having after upgrading www.checkthesock.com. http://blog.nathanhumbert.com/2010/02/rails-3-loading-rake-tasks-from-gem.html
Pseudorandom thoughts, mostly on programming and web application development. Tuesday, February 16, 2010. Rails 3: Loading rake tasks from a gem. Several times in the last year I have wished that a gem could have rake tasks that would be loaded into a Rails app. I looked into it several times but kept running into dead ends with Rails 2. Since the Rails 3 beta came out I decided to try again, this time with much more success. Module MyPlugin require 'my plugin/railtie' if defined? Using your new rake task.

Pseudorandom thoughts, mostly on programming and web application development. Wednesday, February 29, 2012. Rails A/B testing with Split on Heroku. I recently decided to start doing some A/B testing on www.checkthesock.com. The last time I tried A/B testing I used Google website optimizer, it worked fairly well but I did not like how difficult it was to setup a test. This time I looked around for A/B testing tools for rails. I ended up finding split. ENV['REDISTOGO URL'] = 'redis:/ localhost:6379'. To co...

Tuesday, April 27, 2010. 8220;Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears; I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.” (pg 132). Mark Antony is one of the protagonists in Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar. He is one of Caesar’s closest friends, as well as his right hand man. Antony’s loyalty to Caesar and willingness to seek revenge for Caesar’s death motivates him to murder the conspirators. My Julius Caesar essay is better than my Alchemist essay because I have better Ideas and Content. The main p...

Going into this I was worried about the workload but I have found this manageable and who would have thought I would exceed the project report limit (well I guess anyone who has seen my assignments).
