Birth, Death and Marriage. Thorney Hill compound was the largest of the seven compounds in the New Forest in 1930 with up to four hundred inhabitants at a time. It was during the 1930’s that mains water was brought to the compound but there was only one tap to serve many families. Most the children at this time attended Thorney Hill School in School Lane. As new brick built council houses were being erected the pre-fabricated buildings were taken down one by one to stop squatters moving in. By 1974 t...

Birth, Death and Marriage. First Steps Pre-School and Family Group are carrying out a project called ‘Remembering Our Family’. This project intends to collect as much information as possible from the local Gypsy/Traveller community that have settled at locations within the New Forest including Thorney Hill and Bransgore. We intend to collate many family trees and have these printed out for all the families involved, so that they may be displayed in their homes and shared with future generations.

Birth, Death and Marriage. The New Forest Gypsies Diet. Fruits and berries would have been collected by the woman and children and made into drinks, jams and cooked in puddings. Herbs were also collected up and would be used in cooking, made into herb teas and used for making remedies to keep their families healthy.
