Nurse Jen's Travels

Tuesday, October 21, 2014. A bit rough at sea. And where might that be? Well, let me tell you how we got to this point. So Ebola. Everyone knows about Ebola. It's in the news, it's causing panic, it's a real pain in the you-know-what. And to be really selfish, it has kept me from my home in Africa. But this entry isn't about Ebola, it's about what's next. What happens when you don't secure for sea. We enjoy our views of Table Mountain from the ship. Giving tours in the OR. Of course our time in Cape Town...

Nurse Jen's Travels: March 2014

http://nursejenstravels.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, March 30, 2014. Here is another amazing story written by one of our ship writers about a woman name Claire. She had a goiter that grew over the past 25 years and almost killed her. I was privileged to assist Dr AJ with her surgeon. Here's her story. Or a barely four-foot-tall woman named Claire, social rejection was a daily reality. The focus of this negative attention was an enormous goiter hanging conspicuously from her neck like a sack of oranges. The pastor showed Claire “before” ...She becam...

Nurse Jen's Travels: October 2013

Wednesday, October 9, 2013. Patient Stories- The Vernel Effect. This is a lovely story written by one of the ship writers. A little taste of what we are doing here in Congo. It’s impossible to be angry with Vernel because he’s just too cute – and now he knows it! Vernel is a wily six-year-old who is probably up to something that he’ll most likely get away with. Why will he get away with it? You can’t remember. I call this “The Vernel Effect.”. Vernel’s father brought him to the Africa Mercy. Vernel&#8217...

Nurse Jen's Travels: Three Hats, One Heart

http://nursejenstravels.blogspot.com/2014/04/three-hats-one-heart.html

Sunday, April 6, 2014. Three Hats, One Heart. So up until now, I have only been focusing on my job as the OR Educator. Mondays I spend most of the day doing orientation with all the new nurses that arrive. With such a high turnover rate in the OR, it isn’t uncommon to have 4-7 new nurses a week, that can be 1/3 of the staff in the OR! Everyone gathers to say Thank You to Dr Itengre before he leaves. The ladies have fun on Deck 7. Let the party begin! The first of many dress ceremonies.

Sunday, March 10, 2013. Je Suis une Infirmìere en Salle D’opération. What is a Dayworker? Dayworkers are: cooks, housekeepers, deckhands, dishwashers, photographers, sterilizers, dental assistants, translators, orderlies and a hundred other things. They are local people that are hired on to help us while we are in port. In the hospital, our dayworkers act as translators, nursing assistants & orderlies. Most of our patients don’t speak English and for most French isn’t their first language. Tina and I sta...

drugging the world, one syringe at a time

Friday, April 27, 2012. Maybe it was the subconscious awareness of my incessantly gurgling stomach, or the growing sense of longing for something reminding of home, or the realization that the past couple of days had marked a milestone in this tortuous road that is my life, that impelled me to achieve the unachievable: to cook myself a proper Filipino meal. Regardless, I’m proud to say that this short misadventure didn’t prove to be as disastrous as I expected. The end product? And let it stand for sever...

Tales From the Anatomy Lab

Tales From the Anatomy Lab. This page was set up as a catharsis to help me in dealing with the physical and emotional rigors of human cadaver dissection, which is an elective part of my education towards an eventual career as a nurse practitioner. Saturday, July 18, 2009. I haven't forgotten about this blog. After we started the brain extraction, things became a bit intense and I needed to step away from all of this and do normal. Things. To get my mind off of it all (no pun intended). Links to this post.
