The book,. By Nebraskan novelist Wright Morris, would do. The title made me think of T. S. Eliot and. Wasps and Bees of Minnesota. Dragonf...

Of Books and Bugs. Musings on the near at hand. June 13, 2015. June 13, 2015. Creeping Charlie in our yard, sprayed by our neighbor June 2015. Last year a newly married couple moved in next door. One of the first things they did was cut down trees, tear up their yard, and put down sod. Suggesting to the young man of the house the option of perennial grasses, he quipped that he’d really prefer concrete across the entire lot. But they’d be good for insects. So why, as a culture, do we do this? Everyone is ...

Dan Tallman’s Bird Blog: Anhingas, oil glands, and corrugated tail feathers
http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com/2010/01/anhingas-oil-glands-and-corrugated-tail.html
Saturday, January 30, 2010. Anhingas, oil glands, and corrugated tail feathers. Erika and I saw many Anhinga during our recent Florida trip. Anhingas are also called snakebirds because of their habit of swimming with only their long necks above water. (The word Anhinga comes from a Brazilian Indian word for devil bird.). None of my sources suggest a reason for this structure. (Notice that this bird has speared what appears to be a sunfish, and that its head feathers are remarkably wet.). For my collectio...

Dan Tallman’s Bird Blog: Red-shouldered Hawk
http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com/2015/08/red-shouldered-hawk.html
Monday, August 3, 2015. Overall, during our 25 March visit to the National Audubon Society’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. We saw fewer birds than on our previous visits. Perhaps the time of year was poor, and, at the time, the swamp was suffering from drought. We were, delighted, to find the south Florida race of Red-shouldered Hawks, to be common as always. Buteo lineatus eximus. Breeds in the southern half of Florida. It is relatively small and has a pale gray or whitish head. Posted by Dan Tallman.

Wednesday, July 29, 2015. On 24 March, Erika and I spent the night in Venice, Florida. The next day we were close to our goal of Sanibel Island, and so found ourselves with a bit of time to explore. We found our first destination by looking for nearby hotspots in BirdsEye. The phone app that serves as a birding “Geiger Counter.” We found a rookery a short distance from our hotel run by the Venice Area Audubon Society. We recognized our destination by the groups of birders with long camera lenses. By the ...

Dan Tallman’s Bird Blog: Purple vs. House Finch
http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/purple-vs-house-finch.html
Monday, March 29, 2010. Purple vs. House Finch. The sides of the head of the "female" Purple Finch (above) are also more striking than those of the female House Finch (below). Identifying finches in these plumages is usually a fairly easy call (at least east of the Rockies; out west different races of the two species are more similar). But the discussion gets more complicated! Male House Finches, on the other hand, become red during their first fall. Posted by Dan Tallman. Lynne at Hasty Brook. These pho...

http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com/2012/02/eurasian-collared-dove.html
Thursday, February 2, 2012. Eurasian Collared-Doves are an invasive species sweeping across North America. Individual birds tend to exhibit long-distance dispersal. In North America, however, the situation is confused by multiple local releases. The first photograph is this post is from Key West, Florida, in 2011. The second, taken several years ago, is part of a flock of 80 birds near a grain elevator and cattle feedlot in Fort Pierre, South Dakota. Posted by Dan Tallman. February 3, 2012 at 11:52 PM.

I make my resolutions and goals, I put on multiple sweaters, I make soup. I put laminated snowflakes up on all the windows, just to give us all (me) something pretty and interesting to look at.
