An hours hop north of Manila and we find ourselves on the tarmac at Laoag, we wandered across the runway in the stifling heat to be met by our driver Pedro who whisked us away south again toward our goal of Vigan. However along the way we made a visit to "Malacanang of the North", the former country mansion/estate of Ferdinand Marcos and of course his infamous better half, the queen of shoes, Imelda. Through our contacts in Manila we were fortunate enough to have connections with the Mayor in Vigan who arranged a private guided tour for us around the artisans of the Ilocos Sur provence. We grabbed a quick local lunch at the beautiful costal village of Sabangan Beach. And then hit another church with an original bell tower built in 1591 and still standing and operable. Monday, 3 August 2015. St Augustines' Earthquake Baroque. After the enchantment of Imelda's closet we stopped at the Paoay Church. Which is dedicated to St Augustine. The architectural style is known as Earthquake Baroque. And we felt transported to some distant South American country. The facade was massive and imposing, the interior was not as mystical and needed a few Pesos spent on it, the tin roof was a little underwhelming. Jumping for Jesus in Paoay. Posted by Mr.Brown. Sunday, 2 August 2015. American Cemetery and Memorial. For a family outing on Saturday morning we went to visit the American Cemetery and Memorial. In the Fort Bonifacio area. It was quite fascinating as an oasis of green, orderly calm atop a hill surrounded by the general hum and chaos that is Manila.
