Okains Bay Maori and Colonial Museum. Treasures from our Maori and Colonial Past presented in a truly unique setting. The Whaakata (Meeting House) was built on site with complete adherence to tikanga Maori (traditions and protocols), using original materials from other meeting houses. Most of the carving was undertaken by well known New Zealand master carver John Rua. Inside features beautiful carvings, tukutuku and kowhaiwhai panels.

A cruiseliner had anchored in the bay and swarms of people were gradually being delivered to shore by a couple of bright orange tenders.
