Summer, sand and sandwiches. As i sit down to write this post, my mind rushes back to those first, early fall days of school. sitting at my desk, hands folded and donning a new dress (. What a little lady. Expertly chosen by my mother, i’d hang on every word uttered by my adored teachers. then, at their direction and this was my favorite part i’d choose a shiny new, razor-sharp #2 pencil and begin to craft my annual essay about how i spent my summer vacation. An older me, sis at the Cape. In my mind, i s...

Little bird flies home. Witty hip. smart. generous. warm. as glamorous as any movie star of her era. my mom was the mom other kids wanted to have. on school field trips, at Brownie meetings and at birthday parties, my friends flocked around her, jockeying to be in the position of holding her hand. a shy kid, i hung back and observed as she split her attention between her many admirers. Um, i might have been a little jealous. A child with spindly legs and a petite appetite, my grandfather nicknamed her.

When i was in high school, my dad and i acted out the same scene from our family play nearly every Friday night. he’d be sitting at the kitchen table reading the newspaper. i’d walk in and put my hand on his shoulder. Hey, dad. mom’s gonna be home in about an hour. what do you want to do for dinner? Any other day of the week, he’d already have something simmering on the stove. but not on Friday. dad would look up at me over his reading glasses and say, as if it were an epiphany,. How about getting a pizza.

Yesterday afternoon, i sat down in front of one of those Hallmark channel. Don’t judge me. The plot: expected. but unexpectedly, laugh-out-loud funny. i looked over at your photo, perched in its prominent place on the credenza, and knew how much you would have loved watching it with me. I can’t tell you how i miss those moments. Or not, because i’m a sap. Because you just may have forgotten you’ve come to adore them. Today, like every day, little bird, i remember you. and even though you’re not sitti...

Whoopie – Winnie turns 98! Today, Winnie the English bull terrier turns 98. That’s 14 in people years. She’s as spirited and demanding as she was at three months, when she first became a member of our family. yeah, sometimes she forgets things. like why she was walking down the hallway. but who doesn’t? She’d rather snatch a little nap before dinner, instead of gnawing on some rubbery-tasting toy. but who wouldn’t? Many happy returns of the day, pumpkin! simply little bird |

It was with that kind of simplicity in mind that i went about to create mom’s birthday tribute dinner. I began with her childhood favorite, lamb rib chops. on the occasions i had the privilege to make them for her, our little bird. Would daintily pick up a diminutive broiled chop and eat every bit until only the bone remained. she’d then look up and grin that signature grin of pure satisfaction. no lamb in my experience has been as tender and buttery as the Sea Breeze Farm. Again, i grilled the asparagus).

I lost my mom exactly three years ago. since little bird’s passing, the thanksgiving holiday (ever our family’s favorite) has become more of a time of reflection than of feastivity ( yeah, not a typo. In a medium bowl,...
