Preparing the Chickens For The Winter. I start the winter preparations by giving the old stable that they live in a very good clean and treating all the nooks and crannies with a red mite powder. An Ode to Sweet Peas. Annual climber grown for its fabulous scent and pretty colours. The first sweet peas are believed to have been found growing wild in Sicily in 1695 by the Sicilian monk Father Francis Cupani. Cupani sweet peas are still available to grow today and I always like to have a few in the garden.
