Yet another blog about networking (by Pete Lumbis)
State and Configuration – Excessive Redundancy
https://peteccde.wordpress.com/2015/06/14/state-and-configuration
Yet another blog about networking. June 14, 2015. Having spent my entire career with Cisco (working with IOS and NX-OS), until recently, I never realized there was a difference between the state of a system and the configuration applied to it. Now that I spend my days in Linux. I see there is a difference between the two. Interface ethernet0/1 ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0. In (Debian based) Linux I’d do the same sort of thing in the /etc/network/interfaces. This is the same in Linux. Simply c...
Getting Used to Cumulus Linux – Updating Packages to Fix Problems – Excessive Redundancy

Yet another blog about networking. February 17, 2015. Getting Used to Cumulus Linux – Updating Packages to Fix Problems. I want to share a story of a recent issue I encountered with a customer. The customer is using Namespaces. I just need to figure out a way to upgrade only that feature before we upgrade the platform. Most of the software running on Cumulus comes as a package. Packages provide an easy way to update and install software on Linux. Program, I can find it with. This tells me the cl-utilities.
Interviewing for the Engineering Mindset – Excessive Redundancy
https://peteccde.wordpress.com/2015/06/22/interviewing-for-the-engineering-mindset
Yet another blog about networking. June 22, 2015. Interviewing for the Engineering Mindset. Russ White recently wrote. About IT skills and the need to be more valuable to the business. He also touches on something he’s spilled a lot of ink on in the past: Good engineers think like engineers, not just know all of the commands. I frequently hear people complain about network engineer interviews that play out like CCIE exams. Random questions like “What does the PSH flag in TCP do”? 2) Ask questions they ha...
OSPF Virtual Links – The Details – Excessive Redundancy
https://peteccde.wordpress.com/2014/10/15/ospf-virtual-links-the-details
Yet another blog about networking. October 15, 2014. OSPF Virtual Links – The Details. A little over a year ago I wrote an article on Cisco.com. On how to take the OSPF topology table and turn it into a diagram. The goal of that document was to really show how each LSA interacts and creates a network. What has been missing from that document is how Virtual Links work in this context. Mystery 1: DNA Bit. Notice that all LSAs learned over the Virtual Link have the Do Not Age (DNA). R5#show ip ospf database...
Getting Used to Cumulus Linux – Linux as a Network OS – Excessive Redundancy
https://peteccde.wordpress.com/2015/01/12/70
Yet another blog about networking. January 12, 2015. Getting Used to Cumulus Linux – Linux as a Network OS. Initial Disclaimer: At the time of writing this I work for Cumulus Networks. In this first post I wanted to describe just what is Cumulus Linux? Before Cumulus Linux makes sense you have to look at where network operating systems (NOS) came from. If we look at NX-OS, the NOS that runs on Nexus platforms, it (very) roughly looks like this. Want to start writing automation scripts in PHP. Like Dell t...

On May 25, 2016. I am fortunate enough, to be able to goto Cisco Live US! Last year was such an experience, that my hopes are really high for this year as well. I will be arriving on Friday the 8th and leaving on the 15th. Not a long stay this time, but it was what my boss could arrange for. Again this year I will be bringing my better half, so she can experience the city and hopefully we’ll get a few hours of sightseeing in between commitments. Drop me a line and maybe we can meet up! On May 15, 2016.

On May 15, 2016. A couple of weeks ago I had the good fortune of attending Jeremy Filliben’s CCDE Bootcamp. It was a great experience, which I will elaborate on in another post. But one of the technology areas I had a bit of difficult with, was GETVPN. So in this post a I am going to setup a scenario in which a customer has 3 sites, 2 “normal” sites and a Datacenter site. The customer wants to encrypt traffic from Site 1 to Site 2. The topology is as follows:. CE1#sh ip bgp BGP table version is 7, local ...

On May 22, 2008. I was checking piratgruppen.org (A place in favor of sharing things online) the other day, and found that a new site, rettighedsportalen.dk had been started by a former spokesperson of piratgruppen.org. The site aims to shed some light on immaterial “rights”. This is a good idea and I for one welcome it. One of the first articles that was posted was from the chairman of KODA, a rightsholder organisation for composers in Denmark. His article can be found here. On May 13, 2008. The only re...
