Portable Teacher: Living the Dream Day #1
http://portable-teacher.blogspot.com/2012/03/living-dream-day-1.html
Monday, March 26, 2012. Living the Dream Day #1. My name is on the board! Day 1 in Linda Rief's classroom started with advisory. Advisory is a time to get settled, to work on projects, to plan or update calendars. There are no school bells at Oyster River Middle School. I never realized what a difference that makes. No rush. No clock watching. No running-out-of-time feeling. Beyond the building schedule though is Rief's schedule for collecting students' journals. See it on the board? My students are crea...

One of two pages of journal writing for this week; the student did eventually come to the conclusion. That though stressful, students need to stop worrying and consider that everything will be fine. Grow Cook. Read. Write. A place for starting over. The wind is gusting at us from the northwest, but the spruce trees outside my window seem to only be doing a slow-motion wave in response. Those trees are currently home to a male and female cardinal, a whole bevy of black-capped chickadees, and other birds that I see flitting about but haven’t yet been able to identify. This entry was posted in Growing. March 18, 2015. Love me, love my unpainted walls. 3 thoughts on “ Except for this. Spring is here in ...

Grow Cook. Read. Write. A place for starting over. Look out for each other. I am thinking a lot about perception and kindness today. I had some time this afternoon to be busy with my hands and let my mind wander while I was getting seed-starting trays ready to go (outside! I got to thinking about how in all the places I’ve lived, I’ve most felt the recipient of sincere, invested kindness here. That’s not to say that people in the other places weren’t kind–of course they ...This line of thought led me to ...

Grow Cook. Read. Write. A place for starting over. I’m sorry, Ms. Heard. I am supposed to be writing about my writing space. But the snow is melting so fast. I think I can hear it. The sun is moving west over the mountain. And its light is golden on the. Winter-browned and tangled grass. The breeze is blowing the oak tree’s branches. And the tips of them are a reddish brown. Waiting to push out their new leaves. The water is running in rivulets down the drive. And along the road; it puddles in low spots.

Grow Cook. Read. Write. A place for starting over. Back to the strangeness. Mostly, that makes me want to run around shrieking and throwing things, but I remind myself that tomorrow it is supposed to be 50 degrees and sunny, so the ever-growing coating of white stuff outside my window will disappear rapidly. It helps. Kind of. I still feel a shriek bubbling up occasionally. Snow in late April. It is awfully pretty, but I am ready for that daffodil, tulip, and lilac kind of beauty. April 26, 2016. A few of the celeriac seeds have sprouted, along with some escarole and onions, and I have to remind myself that checking on the growing area every five minutes isn’t going to actually make any other seeds sprout. Just Say No? | Teacher in Transition

Where Do I Go From Here? August 25, 2010 · 7:43 pm. As teachers we are often expected to go above and beyond. Sometimes it is schools that place these objectives on us requiring more paperwork or lengthier lesson plans. Sometimes parents expect it: asking teachers to call home every time a homework assignment is missed or wanting 24/7 contact to discuss every detail of the child’s schooling. How about more than two hours after work? Paid for a field trip? Are you a fan of educational sites on Facebook?

From the Other Side →. August 11, 2010 · 9:21 pm. Vocab, Thinking Maps, and Dabbleboard (Oh, My). I was looking for a new way to approach vocabulary. I teach Greek and Latin roots, but was having trouble finding a way to show how the morphemes are able to manipulate words. (Up to now, there were more lists to be memorized.) Our reading specialist recommended the Circle Map. Since she knew I was going to be trying Thinking Maps. This year. (Not selling them; my school bought the handbook.). Where Do I Go ...

Thursday, March 29, 2018. Good, groceries and Vietnam. This week, friend Sara Holbrook wrote about food being served in a school cafeteria in Romania. Her post resonates. 8220;I live in Singapore, but I am from the United States,” I replied. 8220;Ah, they’ve all but ruined food in the states, right? Poison and preservatives, I think,” he said. I don’t disagree. How could we reshape ourselves, our children, our elderly, if stopped serving factory-made foods? Eat fresh. Move more. The work of food. Birdson...
