Ralph's Christian History Blog. Small stories of a big God. Wednesday, 2 January 2013. 8216;I Never Expected to See so Much of Heaven this Side of Time’. Picture the scene. It’s 1860. It’s past midnight, well out to sea off the Scottish coast. A calm night, the ocean is like a millpond. The seagulls that had followed the fishing trawler during the day have headed back to land. All is quiet. Suddenly, from out of the quietness, out of the boat, comes the sound of a hymn, sung for all it was worth:. My sho...

Ralph's Christian History Blog. Small stories of a big God. Friday, 11 April 2014. Christ and Cholera in New York. He refused to leave New York. This was where God had called him to preach, and despite the cholera epidemic which was killing up to one hundred a day, Finney stayed on and preached on. Finney was bold in his preaching, challenging people to come to the front and kneel at the ‘anxious seat’. Meetings would often go on through the night and majored on prayer.
