Crab Juice: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
http://www.crab-juice.com/2012/04/girl-with-dragon-tattoo.html
Personal reviews of things that matter. Monday, 30 April 2012. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. A journalist’s investigation of an old mystery uncovers old secrets and hidden cravings. The film's heroes are true Apple fans, using Macs wherever they go. However, as we can see, these Macs are being hacked left and right. I wonder whether Apple is happy with the publicity its computers received by the film, or whether it is unhappy with the perception its computers are so easily hacked. Escape from New York.

Crab Juice: The Water Diviner
http://www.crab-juice.com/2015/05/the-water-diviner.html
Personal reviews of things that matter. Thursday, 7 May 2015. An Aussie father who lost his three sons at Gallipoli goes there to track them down. Serves that good old Murdoch point of view on the ANZAC motif, we sought to learn further. You know, maybe we might even receive a proper account (for a change! On what the ANZAC story is/was all about. We turned to our old mate Russell Crowe and his recent 2014 account, which also happens to be his directorial debut, The Water Diviner. By my account, The Wate...

Personal reviews of things that matter. Monday, 27 July 2015. A smart, successful, woman is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Julianne Moore is Alice, a successful person by all accounts: the loving wife of John (Alec Bladwin), the mother of three great children, and a world renowned professor. Seriously, mortals cannot expect more luck than this. Which is exactly why the onset of Alzheimer’s is such a disaster: Alice, and everyone around her, has so much to lose! Crab Juice: Adore
http://www.crab-juice.com/2015/04/adore.html
Personal reviews of things that matter. Thursday, 30 April 2015. Two middle aged women develop romantic relationships with their each other's sons. If one seeks to find messages here, then perhaps these are to do with our fear of the strange[r] or our built in reluctance to change when we think we have a been dealt good cards. You can thus argue Adore is an anti conservatism movie, but I think that would be stretching things too much. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

Crab Juice: Edge of Tomorrow
http://www.crab-juice.com/2014/10/edge-of-tomorrow.html
Personal reviews of things that matter. Friday, 17 October 2014. A guy recruited to fight humanity’s war against an invading alien race repeatedly wakes up to relive the same day of fighting each time he’s killed in action. Edge of Tomorrow is a film on the edge. Silly pun, I know, but bear with me. Its starting point is on the compromised side of things. The movie is based on a Japanese science fiction tale, with the book's related comic called All You Need Is Kill. Into the frame comes Cage (Cruise), a...

Crab Juice: While We’re Young
http://www.crab-juice.com/2015/07/while-were-young.html
Personal reviews of things that matter. Sunday, 19 July 2015. While We’re Young. A middle aged couple is revived by befriending a couple in their twenties. As these themes are explored, While We’re Young tends to deteriorate into your typical Ben Stiller movie rather than keep a steady hold on the questions that should find any middle age person listening with much interest. On the positive side, Watts does her usual excellent self; again and again (refer to Adore. It may disguise itself as an ordinary s...

Crab Juice: St. Vincent

Personal reviews of things that matter. Sunday, 7 June 2015. A grumpy old man develops a relationship with the new next door neighbour child. By now you should have been initiated on the genre of the grumpy old man that turns out to have a heart of gold, especially the niche that features an old actor we’ve seen plenty of times before deliver his pièce de résistance. I’m referring here to Clint Eastwood and his Gran Torino. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Thor: The Dark World.

Crab Juice: The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest
http://www.crab-juice.com/2014/05/the-girl-who-kicked-hornets-nest.html
Personal reviews of things that matter. Thursday, 29 May 2014. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest. The final episode of the Millennium Trilogy, concluding the story of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Hot on the heels of The Girl Who Played with Fire. Write it down as another achievement for the Internet. I really, really, liked the very final scene's encounter. I won't spoil it for you, but I will just say that the awkward encounter portrayed there is so very much me. View my complete profile. Notes ...

Crab Juice: Data and Goliath by Bruce Schneier
http://www.crab-juice.com/2015/04/data-and-goliath-by-bruce-schneier.html
Personal reviews of things that matter. Saturday, 18 April 2015. Data and Goliath by Bruce Schneier. A review of the current, ominous, state of commercial and governmental data surveillance. As testified by this blog, Cory Doctorow is one of my favourite authors. However, as much as I like Doctorow as a writer, I like him even more for his stand on matters relating to cultural sharing. To point at one example, all of his books are available as free downloads at his own website. View my complete profile.
