Programming, psychology, and "stuff". Friday, February 22, 2013. As I read and listen to Nicholas Nassim Taleb. On the topic of his coined word, anti-fragility. I struggle to keep an open mind but I increasingly begin to feel he's jumped the shark. He claims to be defining something that is not resilience, because an anti-fragile system is one that actually gains. From disorder/stressors/events. Ron Burk: June 2009

http://ronburk.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Programming, psychology, and "stuff". Monday, June 15, 2009. The Limits of Melancholy. Of all the programming books you've never read that I've read more than once, The Limits of Software. By Robert Britcher is my favorite. I say you've never read it with some confidence because a) few programmers read books and b) this book was doomed to a narrow audience by its very nature. The first audience-limiting feature of the book is its style. As Robert Glass. More Than a Feeling. Links to this post. A blog ful...

Ron Burk: April 2009

http://ronburk.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Programming, psychology, and "stuff". Wednesday, April 29, 2009. Tonight is Ignite Seattle 6. The latest in a series of collections of short talks by varied speakers on topics at least vaguely of interest to geeks. I am slated to give a talk on "The Psychology of Incompetence". This has turned out to be basically an extended humorous rant on unrecognized incompetence embedded in the software industry. It'll be interesting to see how well I can perform it and how well it plays to the audience.

Ron Burk: June 2008

http://ronburk.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

Programming, psychology, and "stuff". Tuesday, June 03, 2008. And so the blog begins. I haven't had much use for blogs, but now I'm working on a book and will (one of these days, I sure hope) have something to promote, and voila - I now have a use for blogs! My name is Ron Burk. I was the editor of the magazine Tech Specialist. Which turned into Windows/DOS Developer's Journal. Which turned into Windows Developer's Journal. But all along the way, there's always been this book (remember seeing the word "p...

http://ronburk.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Programming, psychology, and "stuff". Thursday, August 12, 2010. Cash Cow Disease: The Cognitive Decline of Microsoft and Google. Watching the recent product retraction of Google Wave convinced me that Google is fully infected with the same protracted, end-stage wasting disease that has consumed Microsoft for years: cash cow disease. Cash cow disease costs stockholders untold (sometimes actively buried in accounting maneuvers) dollars. Consider Xbox, which consumed billions (that's with a 'b') before...

Ron Burk: January 2010

http://ronburk.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Programming, psychology, and "stuff". Thursday, January 07, 2010. Since my last post was about the cloud, why not another? I was reading the blog of Nicholas Carr (whose "Does IT Matter" currently holds a place of honor in the introduction to my book-in-progress), as he noted approvingly. The attempt by Amazon to create a spot market for computing cycles. After failing to get my comments on that thought posted there (ain't technology grand? I think the label of "the cloud", and to a lesser extent, attemp...

Calibrating a 5″ Raspberry Pi touchscreen in Jessie – A taste of blue feathers

https://wyliecoyoteuk.wordpress.com/2016/06/28/calibrating-the-5-touchscreen

A taste of blue feathers. Random thoughts on life, food and IT. Calibrating a 5″ Raspberry Pi touchscreen in Jessie. Previously, I posted about a 5″ touchscreen for the Raspberry Pi. But I did not mention calibrating the touchscreen. After a week’s holiday, I came back and sorted this fairly easily. I was using Raspbian Jessie from NOOBS 1.8. First I installed a new utility:. Sudo apt-get install xinput-calibrator. Sudo nano /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/98-calibration.conf. My entries are below:. You are c...

wyliecoyoteuk – A taste of blue feathers

https://wyliecoyoteuk.wordpress.com/author/wyliecoyoteuk

A taste of blue feathers. Random thoughts on life, food and IT. Wile E. Coyote, for those who don't know, chases a blue bird called a roadrunner, in hope of dinner. His main attributes are dogged determination and hunger. Despite repeated failures and setbacks, he keeps on trying. I have a hunger for knowledge, and the occasional taste of blue tail feathers keeps that hunger sharp. 16 x 2 character I2C LCD display. This is the sketch I used to test them with an Arduino Uno:. Set the LCD address to 0x3F f...

Rants on computing, politics, and life. Posted on September 16, 2012, 9:57 pm, by Kathryn Huxtable, under Other. As you can see by my profile picture, I decided to color my entire head blue, with some purple and green here and there. It’s been a month, and I’m really enjoying it. It is fading somewhat, but still very bright. There is a certain amount of regrowth, and I’ll be bleaching my roots and recoloring it this weekend. More of the same, I think. Rants on computing, politics, and life. Posted on January 15, 2014, 9:47 pm, by Kathryn Huxtable, under Food. Somehow I have omitted my signature recipe from my blog. It is online, but not linked, except from Google , and that’s a serious oversight. So, here is a link to my French Silk Pie recipe. Warning: this contains raw eggs. I always use fresh organic eggs. Rants on computing, politics, and life. I have always read a lot. Generally, I focus in one area for several years and then move to something else. I’ve always read a lot of science fiction and fantasy, though I read less these days than I did ten or fifteen years ago. My current reading is not really focussed in any one area. I’ve been reading some mysteries, some sf, some economics, some astrophysics, some mythological analysis, some history. Which was a sequel to. My argument against all this is:.

Rants on computing, politics, and life. Posted on November 19, 2011, 8:51 am, by Kathryn Huxtable, under Other. Since June, I’ve been working at H&H Color Lab. Which processes color photos from professional photographers and produces high-end products such as wedding albums, greeting/anniversary/graduation cards, canvas gallery wraps (made by dye sublimation of an image onto canvas and wrapped around a wood frame), and much more. They also can handle normal photo prints. But I’ve been busy with work.
