Narrative #2 - The Aleutians. This narrative is in memory of my partner and friend, Doug Harris. To fly the 60 miles to a bear hunter's cabin on the shore of Canoe Bay. The incidents referred to in this narrative were taken from my 1989 field journal. We made our contribution to this grim statistic when my partner and dear freind Doug Harris, and another geologist friend. Along with the pilot of the helicopter. This narrative is dedicated to Doug and the others who died that day. Gold in Every Pan! For t...

Narrative #7 - Sailing. Sailing south from Bequia ( see map - 258K. We dropped the sail and motored easily into the opening with no more than 5 feet on either side between Sea Dart and the coral reefs. It was very close, but not unusual for sailing in the Caribbean basin and the West Indies. Fitz and I set the anchor and settled in for what we though would be a relaxing night. Out of the Frying Pan Into the Fire. There was very little wind blowing, since we were on the lee side of the island. I shoul...

J D Bell's Writings and Art. I've had friends call me eclectic and I guess there is no better word for me. I have many thoughts and things to say. I will not preach but I may cause you to question what we all have come to believe and understand to be true. I hope you are entertained and leave with deep thought or a smile on your face. Love ya, peace. And yew thought yew knew every plucking thing! Saturday, December 5, 2009. I Bet You Didn't Know. Defeated French, saying, See, we can still pluck yew!

J.Arthur Loose: Damascus Rings, Blades & Jewelry

http://www.jloose.com/studio.html

An Exploration in Niello. Migration Era Pattern Welding. This is the jewelry side of things- there is a jewelry/ burnout kiln, a casting machine (built into the table) a rolling mill just behind the soldering tray and the miscellany of the jeweler's trade. This is my forging area. There are two forges with an interchangeable burner. One is for large billets and one is for blades. The blade forge is based on Don Fogg's. On the right is my 24 ton Uncle Al's Hydraulic Press. A real boon to the billet-maker!

California Custom Knives: A Recreation of a Classic French Utility

http://californiacustomknives.blogspot.com/2014/09/a-recreation-of-classic-french-utility.html

Monday, September 8, 2014. A Recreation of a Classic French Utility. I am So Very excited about this project! This being the first knife in a series of recreations of classic French Cutlery. This whole idea started when I was lucky enough to purchase an older Sabatier utility knife dating from the early 1940's. I got it from a good friend who knows more about classic chef knives than anyone I have ever known. I have learned so much from him about French, German, Spanish and American Cutlery. So as a resu...

California Custom Knives: Introducing > The Bug-Out Camp Knife

http://californiacustomknives.blogspot.com/2015/02/introducing-bug-out-camp-knife.html

Saturday, February 28, 2015. Introducing The Bug-Out Camp Knife. I have been thinking of some ideas for hybrid camp-chef knives lately. Since I have been playing with some Micarta as of late, I thought I would re-tool this stick tang camper that I made originally about 2-years ago. I re-worked the blade-style a bit and am happy with the results. Sharp as a razor and totally capable to prep foods with no problem. Basically looking very much like a chef knife, but with a bit more handle drop, and yet,.

This is that depth and quality and texture of blue. Tuesday, September 23, 2014.

California Custom Knives: June 2014

http://californiacustomknives.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, June 22, 2014. Two Tribal Frenchies in 52100 and Green Maple. These two came out really sweet! I was excited about getting some of the Maple I have had for a long time dyed and stabilized. Did I mention that I LOVE GREEN! And thought that the "Tribal Wrap" with the Translucent G10 would look pretty darn cool. The first handle I did out of the green I did not have the heart to cover any of it up as it was stunning. And I think it looks AWESOME! I hope you enjoy seeing these images. These littel Fr...
