The Surroundings - Saint's Rest

Saint’s Rest is the third to last house on a dead-end road within Marquette’s City Limits. It is a residential area. The part of the beach between the water and the high water mark is regarded as public property, so many residents walk or run along it. One mile east along the beach is Presque isle Park - one of Marquette’s most beloved city parks.

The Cottage in the 1940's. Saint’s Rest, built in about 1926, was one of the first cottages constructed on the 1 1/2 mile stretch of beach that extends between Presque Isle Park and Middle Island Point. Milk could be obtained from the closest neighbor, 1/2 miles away, who had a cow. SL Christensen, Original Owner. Inside View, 1940's. Perishable items, such as milk and cheese, were kept in a dumbwaiter that was lowered to the basement into a tube sunk into the sand, which kept the items cool.
