mrs washalot: August 2010
http://mrswashalot.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
When we still had the tree. We've chopped down the tree where Grace had her little washing line. So it's good that we have some photos of the area in all its grotty glory. She had the bucket of soapy water over by the house and would wash the doll and toy clothes in the bucket and run across the yard with the dripping mess to hang on the line. Not very time and motion efficient, but there you go. I suppose that's not really a factor when you're five. Tuesday, August 17, 2010. Labels: on the line.

Gerard said that I should post Bob Dylan and the Band's clothes line saga here on Mrs Washalot so I went on youtube looking for the orginal, which I didn't find. But I found this cover which is also full of lots of rotary clothes line imagery. And a kind of slow and beautiful drudgery, which fits. The lyrics read like a suburban novel where not much happens, except that there are big things all around. The next day everybody got up. Seein’ if the clothes were dry. The dogs were barking, a neighbor passed.

eater: can't be stuffed banana bread
http://eater2.blogspot.com/2010/04/can-be-stuffed-banana-bread.html
Cant be stuffed banana bread. Last time I made this, I included some vanilla, some fresh nutmeg, some cinnamon, sultanas and a few leftover walnuts we had floating around the cupboard. The time before I put the scant remains of a packet of chocolate chips in. Sultanas are always good. But the optional extras are entirely optional, the bread still tastes lovely without them. 2 tablespoons of golden syrup. 1/2 cup of brown sugar. 1 cup self raising flour (I use wholemeal). Tablespoons of golden syrup.

This year I've been figuring out how to make ice cream and it was a proud moment when Grace said, Mum let's always make our ice cream now. Price and quality were both much better the the shops. Had to buy 50 or so beans but oh, to have an abundance of vanilla! And what better way to use it than in vanilla ice cream. 3/4 cup of white sugar. 1 tablespoon of honey. 1 1/2 cups of milk. 1 1/2 cups of thickened or pure cream. In a good sized bowl, beat the eggs. Place in a plastic container for the fridge and ...

Sweet potato (or pumpkin) cake. 1 cup of brown sugar, or fine raw sugar for a more orange colour. 1 to 1 and 1/2 cup of cooked but not too watery mashed sweet potato or pumpkin (I cook it in not too much water until soft and then drain well. Microwaving would also work well here.). 1/2 teaspoon each of cinnamon, freshly grated nutmeg, allspice and powdered ginger. 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla. 1/2 cup of yoghurt. 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts. 1/2 cup of sultanas. 2 cups of self raising flour. Juice of one lemon.

Really more an idea than a recipe. I made this with the last of our home grown broad beans. Big and tough beans they were and I think the floury texture of fully grown broad beans is what made this dip really nice. Quantities are sort of feel as you go. I also usde thyme and mint because that's what we had and they worked really well. Friday, January 21, 2011. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). DOVE Hot Chocolate Cake with Peppermint Marshmallows. At our place we don't encourage swinging from the clothes line, but we haven't banned it either. Like a good pinner, I went back to the source and found that the work is called Hoisted and is by Jenny Bowker. From the Milan LED festival. Awesome. Just like the real thing - washing hanging in a lane way (do they still do that, or is it just in art? Only it's sparkly. And whiter than real white.
