The Susan Eik Filstead Stroke and Epilepsy Foundation, Inc. was incorporated in August, 1999, as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit charitable foundation registered in the State of Illinois. Through professional and community educational programs, SEF hopes to increase the public's awareness of these problems and challenge the research community to find a cure. Ultimately, the Foundation is committed to finding a cure for epilepsy and reversing the damage caused by stroke. Individuals are not eligible for awards.

In 1992 at the age of 38, I had a stroke. This occurred while in the hospital the morning after the birth of my son, Matthew. My stroke led to four brain surgeries, a life with disabilities and an on-going battle with epilepsy. Four days after my discharge from rehab, I had my first seizure. I was re-admitted to the hospital. A brain abcess was discovered and another brain surgery was performed. After four weeks in the hospital, I went back to rehab. The surgeon responded: "I'll try." He did try.
