SEISMOLOGICAL LABORATORY @ SEOUL NATIONAL UNIVERSITY. 위 사진은 1906년 지진에 의해 파괴된 샌프란스시코 시내를 보여줍니다. 이와 같이 지진은 치명적인 피해를 일으킬 수 있는 자연재해이고, 지진학은 지진 및 지진과 연관된 여러 현상들을 연구하는 자연과학의 한 분야입니다. 서울대학교 지진학 연구실에서는 전 세계적으로 관측된 지진 파형들을 분석하여 지진의 발생 메커니즘과 지구 심부의 흥미로운 구조들을 연구하고 있으며, 자체 보유하고 있는 약 1,200개의 Core로 구성된 Linux Cluster와 10여대의 이동식 광대역 지진계를 활용한 다양한 연구들도 진행하고 있습니다. 또한 지진재해 경감을 위한 강진동 모사 연구와 셰일가스와 같은 비전통 자원 개발 및 이산화탄소 지중저장 모니터링에 널리 활용되는 미소지진 모니터링 연구와 같은 경제/사회적으로 필요한 응용 연구들도 병행하고 있습니다.
