Common Places: Just another day
http://featherlessbiped.blogspot.com/2012/02/just-another-day.html
Hating Valentine's Day has gotten tedious. Some years, it's an act of self-affirmation and a sign of solidarity with all the other single (or, for that matter, unhappily coupled) people out there to rage against the commercial juggernaut of candy, flowers, cards, and overpriced, overcrowded dinners out. Indignation is at least healthier than moping. This year, though, I didn't really feel the need to either mope or rage. I made a donation in the spirit of Panty Palooza. I try to be mindful of the approac...

Common Places: In Praise of Facebook
http://featherlessbiped.blogspot.com/2013/04/in-praise-of-facebook_5.html
In Praise of Facebook. A new article over at. Talks about the dangers of Facebook envy and the threat social media poses to true community. I want to be sympathetic to the author's concerns, but I have to object to the way she universalizes one kind of experience with social media and suggests that it is inherent to those media themselves. For some of us, Facebook can be a valuable tool for promoting true community. I check Facebook when I'm bored and/or lonely, sure. (Not only. Many of the most intimate...

http://featherlessbiped.blogspot.com/2015/05/i-asked-for-tigger-warning-on-ovid.html
I asked for a trigger warning on Ovid before it was cool. Discussions about the possibility and role of trigger warnings in higher education. Always make me a little depressed, because it seems that any mention of the theme instantly devolves into a shouting match between two camps, both terrified that the other will leverage power and privilege to trample on their cherished values, with the result that no one ends up listening to the valid concerns of those who disagree. It turns out, I was way ahead of...

Common Places: Music and me
http://featherlessbiped.blogspot.com/2009/02/music-and-me.html
One of the things that depression stole from me is the capacity to enjoy music. This is about recorded and/or broadcast music - somehow, my relationship to LIVE music is a different, more complicated thing. But I'm not going into that here.). I know fellow depressives who have found music to be a saving grace, something they held onto for dear life when the world stopped making sense. Sometimes it was music in general, sometimes a specific artist/album/song that got them through. My depression has been ...
