Peter Paylor and another Sticky Story. Earlier this month Belleville sculptor Peter Paylor undertook a 1-week artist residency at Small Pond. He showed up with his tools and started looking around the farm for inspiration. He quickly found it in a stack of old cedar rails. Soon the cedar shavings were piling up on the barn floor, perfuming the air with that fresh-hamster-cage smell. He was working on something… something big! Here's Peter with part of his finished sculpture, Community. That was my favour...

meet me at the silo: July 2014

http://smallpondarts.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Barn quilt and bonus dog, Harvey. Some time last winter I got an email from Pat Dubyk telling me that she was trying to start up a barn quilt trail in Prince Edward County. I had never heard of barn quilts before, but a quick image searched turned up hundreds of examples. A barn quilt is a large piece of wood that is painted to look like a quilt block and mounted on a barn or other building. Sitting on great-grandma's quilt, left to right:. Me, my cousins Aaron, Joelle and Christopher,. I used green pain...

In May 2014 I was selected as one of the Cambodia Creative Four. Four international artists destined for Sihanoukville, Cambodia. Each of us would spend one month doing arts workshops with underprivileged kids, hosted by Let Us Create. LUC is an NGO that serves more than 100 kids, providing education, nutrition, and artistic experiences. They provide a safe and nurturing environment where kids can just be kids. This expedition was part of my ongoing Puppets Without Borders. Sovannah Phum Art Association.

meet me at the silo: Boxtopia Circus at Skeleton Park

http://smallpondarts.blogspot.com/2015/06/boxtopia-circus-at-skeleton-park.html

Boxtopia Circus at Skeleton Park. Over the past seven years I've been making these ridiculously large cardboard installations. It all started when Milé and I were backpacking around Europe and we came across a street fair in Lucerne, Switzerland. There were a bunch of large boxes set out in the street, and as I watched the kids run around them, I was like. *YES! I brought the idea back to Toronto and Clay and Paper Theatre. 2015: Boxtopia Circus comes to Skeleton Park, Kingston. There was a fortune telle...

Milé Murtanovski: February 2015

http://murtanovski.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

To the Sound of Trumpets" Exhibition Video. To the sound of voice and piano. During the exhibition of my World War One painting project. 11-30 November 2014) I had a selection of music playing in the venue ( Macaulay Church Museum. In Picton, ON) to convey an overall sense of melancholy –not sadness– while visitors looked at the paintings. Among the songs was one called "So" by my friend, writer and musician Gayleen Froese. Sit back and enjoy the video in full-screen. Posted by Milé Murtanovski.

Milé Murtanovski: Jetpack Update

http://murtanovski.blogspot.com/2015/06/jetpack-update.html

Rather than create something new, I simply transferred the fabric "flames" from the Mark 1 over to the Mark 2 (the fabric moves nicely when I'm up on the stilts). To cover up the now-redundant bottom two holes, I used a couple of stickers on each side, the top holes being all that was needed to attach to the backpack (see the build log. For more details). Painting the fuel tanks red and blue completed the project. The cap and goggles are the same ones I wore at last year's Lantern Festival.

Milé Murtanovski: Blizzmax "On A Roll" Group Show

http://murtanovski.blogspot.com/2015/07/blizzmax-on-roll-group-show.html

Blizzmax "On A Roll" Group Show. Facing the back wall (ladder for scale). A couple of months ago I was invited, along with six other Prince Edward County artists, to participate in "On A Roll," a slightly weird art show that had us make our stuff on 30 feet long, 4 feet high sheets of paper, wrapped around the Blizzmax Gallery. It was an interesting challenge: what medium is best suited for this? What should I do? When will I have the time to do any of it? I went in with Chrissy Poitras. View my complete...

Milé Murtanovski: May 2015

http://murtanovski.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

30" x 36", oil on canvas, 2015, private collection. This is one of two portraits I painted of Toronto-based musician George Meanwell. My intent was to enter one of them into the 2015 Kingston Prize. For portraiture, so I painted two and submitted the one I liked better. I submitted the other one. Although the hands in this one make me pretty happy, I feel I got George's likeness better in the other painting. Where he's playing a concertina. I like this right hand a lot. Milé Murtanovski: August 2014

http://murtanovski.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

I was honoured to be asked and happy to participate in this fun calendar project, spearheaded by Blizzmax Gallery. Duo Peter and Alice Mennacher, which features prints all made at the wonderful Spark Box Studio. I'd been meaning to come up with some ideas for things to print at Spark Box for a few years now, and this was the perfect opportunity to get my ass into gear and print something. I'd done a little bit of this sort of thing during the first few months of Small Pond. Sure, I'm hamming it up here, ...

War is only a cowardly escape from the problems of peace.". 8211; Thomas Mann. 20" x 20", oil on canvas, 2014. The phrase "powder keg" aptly describes Eastern Europe at the beginning of the 20th Century, and the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand* on 28 June 1914 was the spark that set it off. What followed was a series of declarations of war by nations –and if lines were drawn on a map to connect them, they'd resemble a diagram of dance steps:. 28 July: Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia.

Milé Murtanovski: May 2014

http://murtanovski.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

36" x 60", oil and silver leaf on canvas, 2013. To finish up my celebration of the 25 years I've been painting. I wanted to paint a huge picture as the grand finale, featuring some elements referencing a few of my paintings from throughout that time. Gumby appears once again for the first time since my first watercolour back in 1988. The working title for this was BMF25. For a long time until I decided to just name it –rather straightforwardly– Silver Jubilee. Blocking in the hoodoos. I did in 2010. ...

Toxic Shock Syndrome (This Is Not About Tampons). January 5, 2017. Living outside New York has been difficult to feel good about my career.
