We are appealing to the workers and trade unions of Aotearoa to support the Workers and Socialist Party (WASP) election campaign in South Africa. The South African elections will be held on May 7th 2014, and WASP is raising funds in order to contest the election. http://socialistvoice.org.nz/2015/06/national-pushes-ahead-with-more-privatisations
Aotearoa / New Zealand. June 23rd, 2015. National pushes ahead with more privatisations. In May the National government opened New Zealand’s first privately owned prison in Auckland. At the same time the Health Minister announced the trial of ‘social bonds’; effectively rewards for private corporations that are prepared to run social services such as counselling for mental health patients. Those staff will also be paid less and work longer hours, according to CANZ, the prison officers’ union. The amo...

Aotearoa / New Zealand. October 9th, 2014. Environmental issues becoming more severe: Why a socialist outlook is required. Environmental issues are becoming more widespread and severe. They include the degradation of soil, contamination of fresh water, loss of native biodiversity and of course climate change. The trends are concerning, and since there is growing evidence linking environmental impacts with their upstream causes, there is a growing need for environmental protection. Aotearoa / New Zealand. November 6th, 2014. New Zealand: Extreme poverty getting worse. Aotearoa / New Zealand. August 30th, 2014. National’s support sliding as election looms. The ruling National Party is fighting for a third term in office at September’s New Zealand election. For most of the recent term National has polled well and consistently shown that it could almost govern alone. In July 2014 for example support for the government had climbed to 54.9%. http://socialistvoice.org.nz/2015/05/invest-in-renewables
Aotearoa / New Zealand. May 23rd, 2015. The New Zealand government is expanding oil and gas exploration into a number of new sites. These sites were previously either too difficult or costly to pursue and impact on existing ecological reserves. By seeking ‘long-term investment’ from private oil companies, who will tender for the extraction rights, it is clear that short-term gain is the driving force behind this strategy. Lessening our reliance on carbon means investing in public works that expand renewa...
