Before the fire (not to be confused with "After the Fire" - - Don't Turn Around, Oh Oh. We were planning on a trip to Alaska for our 20th Anniversary this year. Well, we blew that wad on hardwood floors and new HVAC ductwork instead. C'est la vie. Drought, and partially caused by the "Phil never finished posting about his 2010 vacation and felt he should before posting new stuff". At any rate...

I also have a "thoughts on life" blog called "Dear World". Monday, July 21, 2014. I'm riding my bike to work and back these days to get back in decent shape. It's working. Slowly. But it's working. On Thursdays, I have a guitar lesson I dri. Ve to over lunch. I don't carry my guitar on a bike, so I go ahead and get up early, ride my bike to campus and back, and drive in. Which is what I was doing this morning. So we went to the ER. Where a lovely (seriously, lovely - woah! By this time it was 1:30 and we...

I also have a "thoughts on life" blog called "Dear World". Tuesday, September 25, 2012. Tuesday morning we slowly packed, and ate oatmeal and coffee. But toward the end of breakfast we saw dark clouds and the fog of mountain precipitation coming over the ridge to the southwest, maybe a mile away. If at all possible, I didn't want our stuff to get wet, or to have it raining in the middle of breaking down the popup and having the mattresses get soaked. It was several miles down the road before we started c...

I also have a "thoughts on life" blog called "Dear World". Friday, August 15, 2014. It's a rule of thumb that it's a better idea to hike in the morning in the summertime mountains if you want to avoid a shower. It's not as big a deal if you're not going to be out exposed above the treeline. I've been out in the rain before - if you're prepared for it it's not so bad. As we walked along we could see trees that had been scorched and even killed by it. Lots of pretty wildflowers and grasses along the way...

Saturday, May 17, 2014. Links to this post. So it's been a while. For various reasons, this blog has been severely neglected the last few years. I'd like to rectify that to some degree. So first thing's first . let's catch up a bit. She just turned 95 last week. After our trip west a couple of years ago. Trenton co...

I also have a "thoughts on life" blog called "Dear World". Friday, August 15, 2014. Squeezing In As Much as Possible. I tried the middle of the river under the bridge. Ran into a ranger painting over graffiti on the bridge. Seriously - it is impressive how well the millions of visitors to the park in general treat the park so well, but there are still some real jerks out there. So I wanted to head up the road to see where this re-route was. There were storms building on the ridge, and you could see i...

I'll have to set this up for you. When we were very little kids, we didn’t really know what to call “Rock and Roll”, as it was distinctly absent in our house. Practically the only times we ever heard it was when teenage babysitters babysat us and turned it on and turned it UP, man! Sent: Sunday, March 02, 2015 7:01 AM. Ok, here goes.

There are several places where the trail crosses the creek coming down from Mills Lake (through Alberta Falls, and beyond) and little rough-hewn foot bridges across with nice views of it cascading down the mountain through the forest. It's been a bit of a saga. We had a leak in May 2006, Jan 2007, and I want to say again in 2009, when I replaced both two-cylinder chambers with new plastic. I tried patching it with Sugru. I've been turning the water heater on only when needed, and even shutting the water to it off. This morning, the water didn't get...
