Southern Ecuador 2010

Wednesday, March 31, 2010. A bit of summing up…. Physically speaking, this trip seemed easier on the body than the 2008 tour. Were we in better shape for this trip? Hardly. We just didn’t have to deal with as much high elevation and the trails, while at times challenging, didn’t seem to be as taxing. In the end it all had to do with our expectations and how we managed them. Truth be known, some of the early overnights and meals will likely wind up being tall tale fodder for many years to come. Southern Ecuador 2010: 03/14/10

http://southernecuador2010.blogspot.com/2010_03_14_archive.html

Sunday, March 14, 2010. Podocarpus NP and Old Zamora Road. While we didn’t have far to drive to begin our birding at the northeast entrance to Podocarpus NP, we still needed to get an early start. That’s when birding is most active. A charming candlelight breakfast got us off in the right direction. There were a few parakeets as heard only: White-eyed and White-breasted. Blue-headed Parrots did a nice flyby and landed within viewing distance. A short detour off the main trail to the Río Bombuscaro. We ev...

Tuesday, March 9, 2010. The second location came with entertainment – the owner had a pet parrot, which had taken a fancy to Melissa’s shoulder, preferring her to its owner’s. Even with the floorshow, the consensus was that we would be glad to see the backside of our hotel in Macará. The distraction of shifting rocks aside, after. Scouring a thick tangle of hillside vegetation for some time,. We finally managed good looks at a Watkin’s Antpitta. We had also begun to see more of the traditional native.

Saturday, March 6, 2010. Up again at 5:00 with breakfast at 6:00. Since we were moving on to another hotel today we 80-stepped our bags to the lobby. Claire’s physical disposition still was a bit unsettled but she looked and felt much improved. Nothing like modern medicine! And when seen usually occurs in flocks of 4 to 15 individuals. A major threat to its existence is deforestation. Finding this bird was by no means going to be a slam-dunk! Tend to be nomadic so any sighting may just be a quick flyover.

Sunday, March 7, 2010. Jorupe JFP and El Empalme. Around 2:00 in the morning a very loud air-raid sounding alarm began to wail. It was deafening! One could hardly escape hearing it (although some apparently slept through it! It went on for a good twenty minutes. Was the hotel on fire? No smoke and hotel staff were not pounding on doors. Was this an earthquake warning system? The building wasn't shaking. Was someone attempting to break into our bus? Then please TURN IT OFF! Next came short, stemmed glasse...

Monday, March 15, 2010. Podocarpus and the Airfield. Speaking of owls, early in the morning two were calling. They sounded close to Richard’s cabin, up the hill from our cabaña. Richard and José ID’d them as Band-bellied Owls. A few of us gathered on the trail in the dark to listen and watch but nothing doing. It would certainly be worth keeping an ear out that evening and early the next morning. S Not too far along the trail we found a small flock of Gray-breasted Parakeets working a colpa. Standing at ...

Follow The Sykes Birds: Caving In

http://tomandcarolsykes.blogspot.com/2015/06/caving-in.html

Wednesday, June 24, 2015. On a cold November day in 1974, Gary Tenen and Randy Tufts, two University of Arizona students who were also amateur cavers, squeezed through a narrow blowhole in the foothills of the Whetstone Mountains. In southeast Arizona. Several hours and four hundred feet later, they discovered what would in 1999, become Kartchner Caverns, Arizona’s 25th state park and eventually, one of the world’s top ten caves known for its mineralogy and color. Our site for the next seven months.

Sunday, February 22, 2015. Rusty’s RV Ranch. Our site and Rusty's and views of the Chiricahuas - rain and shine. Our week long stay began with some Fall birding in Cave Creek Canyon. At the South Fork Zoological and Botanical Area. View from Conrad's deck and approach to Cave Creek Canyon. Gated entrance and water running high in the creek. Blue-throated (top) and magnificent hummingbird. Ste Line Road and what's left of the tank wetlands. The last time we were at Rustler, the campground was still closed...

Follow The Sykes Birds: Tucson to Tombstone

http://tomandcarolsykes.blogspot.com/2015/02/tucson-to-tombstone.html

Monday, February 23, 2015. Site at Desert Trails. It was a pretty straight forward drive from Rusty’s, mostly on Interstate I-10, to Tucson. In the past we usually made Diamond J RV Park. A park we’d used in 2009. While Diamond J back-in sites would have given us more direct access to several thousand acres of public land, our trip to Tucson this time was mostly business and not so much for birding. Common yard birds at Desert Trails - Gambel's quail and Gila woodpecker. He amazingly managed to pull toge...

Just wanted to update everyone on my progress this spring. We've had a tough spring believe it or not. The hot weather has made it difficult to start cold season veggies like peas, and a lot of my seedlings bolted while still in their starter cells. I am going to have to start over with a few things but most everything else looks so good!
