Wednesday, August 26, 2015. Jonathan Daniels Pilgrimage: A Postscript. Alston Fitts (Photo by Lianne Rozell). Regular readers of this blog know that earlier this month I had the privilege of traveling to Alabama with The Episcopal Divinity School. To participate in a pilgrimage with The Diocese of Alabama. To commemorate the life and witness of Jonathan Daniels. Each day I offered some reflections on this experience. Included lunch at St. Paul's in Selma. The food was excellent also! On August 20, 1965.

A long way from home. Thursday, October 30, 2014. Sainthood Comes from God. As I prepare to preach on All Saints’ Sunday. Evan D. Garner. Wednesday, October 29, 2014. Updating Sheep and Wolves. The gospel lesson appointed for today is Matthew 10:16-22. Jesus warns his disciples that he is sending them out as sheep in the midst of wolves—not a very happy image, huh? Or maybe strangers trapped on an elevator? Are we sheep in the midst of wolves? We are sent out not to impose our will on those we encounter&...

A long way from home. Thursday, July 30, 2015. Funny Kind of Work. Earlier this week, when I read Sunday's gospel lesson ( John 6:24-35. I felt drawn to the tension between Jesus and the crowd over the nature of the feeding of the 5,000. Is it merely a miraculous provision (as the crowd seems to think), or is it a demonstration of something bigger (as Jesus strives to make clear)? Yesterday, Steve Pankey wrote about " Works vs. Work. The rich young ruler asked Jesus. "What must we do? The work of God is ...

A long way from home. Sunday, November 30, 2014. What Is God's Dream for the World? November 30, 2014 – Advent 1A. Isaiah 64:1-9; 1 Corinthians 1:3-9; Mark 13:24-37. 169; 2014 Evan D. Garner. Audio of this sermon can be heard here. Do you know what I miss? The Sears Wish Book. Three-hundred pages that stir up within every child (and some adults, too) “the ecstasy of unbridled avarice,” to quote one of my favorite Christmas movies. [1]. Without a centralized resource, Elizabeth and I have to ask and ask a...

A long way from home. Monday, August 31, 2015. Don't Bother Defending Scripture. For once, I'm partly thankful that Labor Day weekend will interrupt the momentum we've built in our congregation since school started two weeks ago. Have you read Sunday's lessons? Tortures my Calvinist-leaning, Luther-loving soul by writing "Faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead." And Jesus. I'm not preaching, but I will enjoy spending the week digging into these texts to try to make sense of them for myself. Was clo...

A long way from home. Thursday, May 28, 2015. Reborn into Trinitarian Understanding. As I prepare to preach on Sunday, I find myself drawn in two distinct but complimentary directions. First, I feel a desire to preach a usual, regular, typical sermon, which, for me, means allowing all of the lessons. So how do you preach on Trinity Sunday? How do you navigate these three texts—each of which deserves a full sermon—without preaching three sermons that don’t really stitch together? Evan D. Garner. I’m...

A long way from home. Tuesday, June 30, 2015. When was the last time we had Native American flute, drums, and dancing on Sunday morning. Our congregation likes to sing, but how often do we have the chance to gather with 1500 people in a massive, resonant auditorium and let the sounds of "Praise to the Lord" fill the whole space? Hopefully, together, we all do. Evan D. Garner. Labels: 2015 General Convention. On Sunday, we will all be back in our churches (or at least somewhere other than General Conventi...
