St Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey
http://www.bermondseyandrotherhithechurches.co.uk/st-mary-magdalen.php
St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey. St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey. What is there to see? The first known record of a church on the site is from 1290. It is likely that there had been a church on the site for some time before, as the Priory had been built in 1082-1090. The new building was completed by 1690 and is essentially what is seen today, although a significant difference was the portico at the west end (on pillars, projecting into Bermondsey Street above the present pavement), above which was the school.

In the early 1980s I became aware of a French photographer, Eugene Atget. When I became aware of Bermondsey, in the early 1980s, I found it a very atmospheric place, decaying and derelict certainly, but very atmospheric and, with Atget's example in mind, I decided to make some images of the place. Who moved his etching studio t...

Denyer Associates, 1979/81. In the late 1970s, Bermondsey was in terminal decline. Caught between the flight of light industry away from London and the determination of a left-wing Council to retain light industry, buildings lay empty, rotting. Of the four diagrams, the 'Street and Alleyway Pattern' is the most interesting....

Denyer Associates, 1979/81. A World of Its Own - 1993. The strange tale of Cardinal Cap Alley. The Bermondsey Street Conservation Area (1971). Elephant and Castle and the Heygate. Wednesday, 7 May 2014. In the 1970s, the Heygate, and the nearby Aylesbury Estates were envisaged as places to house a broad cross section of the community. There were integrated shop units, laundries, public spaces and walkways in the sky, all of which should, in an ideal world, have created an ideal place to live. It is uncle...
