Not that I have anything against green, but where were those beautiful blues and vibrant yellows? Forget ‘Norwegian Summer’, this was more like ‘Laughing Leprechauns.’. Two steps forward . . . | Spinning a Spanish Yarn

https://talesfromashropshiregarden.wordpress.com/2016/12/17/two-steps-forward

Spinning a Spanish Yarn. Two steps forward . . . December 17, 2016. Miles walked: 275.5 Miles left to go: 37. It’s been another busy week and we have made some real progress. After several days of hurling rocks around in a way that would have made Obelix the Gaul proud, Roger has finished building the Great Wall. It. I’ve started clearing the patch under the pear tree by digging out the jungle of raspberry canes. The patch is in danger of looking like a proper garden . . . well, almost! Now we can see th...

Christmas Camino | Spinning a Spanish Yarn

Spinning a Spanish Yarn. December 26, 2016. Miles walked: 302.5 Miles left to go: 10 (almost there! Christmas Eve, Christmas Day . . . and nothing in the village changed. Our neighbours went about their business as usual: pegging out washing, chopping logs, scything grass, digging vegetable patches, walking the lanes and sitting on the bench outside the bar chatting in the sunshine. Not a hint of tinsel or turkey anywhere. Christmas roses, Asturian style. Blindfolded, it would have been hard to guess the...

Food for thought | Spinning a Spanish Yarn

https://talesfromashropshiregarden.wordpress.com/2016/11/29/food-for-thought

Spinning a Spanish Yarn. November 29, 2016. November 30, 2016. I’ve been working in the garden: clearing ground, digging over, picking out stones and forking in muck. Straightening up for a few minutes to stretch my spine and watch the robins feed – it’s amazing how quickly they catch the whiff of worms! I scan the garden and realise just how higgeldy-piggeldy it is. I am in awe of classic showcase vegetable gardens. You know the ones I mean? Golden mustard (local crop, self-sown). Break over, it’s...

Enjoying the Asturian sunshine | Spinning a Spanish Yarn

https://talesfromashropshiregarden.wordpress.com/2016/12/09/enjoying-the-asturian-sunshine

Spinning a Spanish Yarn. Enjoying the Asturian sunshine. December 9, 2016. December 9, 2016. Miles walked: 257.5 Miles left: 55* * See end note. Stunning sunrises followed by beautiful days: it’s definitely been a week to be outside. We went on an interesting walk from a local village; Roger has run there but it was all new to me, very pretty and very peaceful. It ran mostly through woodland (the path was even flat. In places) and we found an old mine entrance, lit up with glow-in-the-dark moss. I’...

January | 2017 | Spinning a Spanish Yarn

https://talesfromashropshiregarden.wordpress.com/2017/01

Spinning a Spanish Yarn. January 25, 2017. Somiedo. A trip we had been talking about for many months but had never got round to doing: yesterday we decided to do something about that. After all, we are as happy walking in January as July and there was temptation in the promise of stunning snow-capped scenery. The Parque Natural de Somiedo is a shining jewel in the Asturian crown. Comprising roughly 300km. Of breathtaking countryside spanning five valleys in the Cant á. Anyway, back to Asturias. Lago de V...

December 2016 – Northbynorth

https://lyokkila.wordpress.com/2016/12

8211; a way of life. Today we have had a real Christmas Eve snowfall, which in itself would be lovely. Unfortunately, we had yesterday rain that fell on the icy roads, trails, paths and everywhere. Thus, on our hill, the judges for figure skating would get a lot of brand-new acrobatic figures to admire – all of them without the benefit of skates! It’s soon time to stay indoors; the Christmas Peace has already been declared for the whole population. Have a wonderful Christmas! On …and waiting….

Season’s curtains – Northbynorth

https://lyokkila.wordpress.com/2016/09/29/seasons-curtains

8211; a way of life. Once again they are in place upstairs – aromatic autumn curtains. A bit late this year – the autumn has been mild so we have let them grow. – Next week seems to be colder and we are looking for other things that might be harvested now. Plenty of tomatoes still in the greenhouses,. Plenty of chillies…. We have spent quite some time out, fishing on the lake…. Even a right-handed child with her right arm in a sling…. 8230;in the forest and in the bog. This entry was posted in Yleinen.

October 2016 – Northbynorth

https://lyokkila.wordpress.com/2016/10

8211; a way of life. White ground and black mood. Oh yes, I know that snow makes the present dark landscape lighter, it protects the plants and makes lovely snow castles – I just don’t like the stuff. For me, half the world ceases to exist when it’s covered by a whitish blanket (it would cease to exist even if the blanket were blue…). We should of course be glad that most of the harvest is safely in – even from the greenhouses. Almost all carrots are in the fridge or in the freezer. The squashes are in&#...

November 2016 – Northbynorth

https://lyokkila.wordpress.com/2016/11

8211; a way of life. We had a few warm days so the 15 cm of snow melted like – well, like snow. It gave us the chance to harvest the last carrots and re-plant the Jerusalem artichokes. The blue hares (at the moment white ones) had taken care of the Brussels sprout harvesting during the snowy period. – Now there is snow again…. Looking at our livingroom windowsill you could imagine that Christmas is already here – 75% of our Christmas amaryllis decided to bloom now. The warm weather has apparently played ...

Who is afraid of the big bad frost? – Northbynorth

https://lyokkila.wordpress.com/2016/10/09/who-is-afraid-of-the-big-bad-frost

8211; a way of life. Who is afraid of the big bad frost? Well, we are. There are still a few things out that don’t like frost though, admittedly, most have been hauled in.The frost has been a frequent visitor this month and we have decided to be rather over-careful than over-confident. The squashes are in. Very soon they will most likely be out again; as you can see they are not ripe – and they turn bad astonishingly quickly. We are eating the most unripe ones as courgettes at the moment. Can I come in?

An update – Northbynorth

https://lyokkila.wordpress.com/2016/11/04/an-update

8211; a way of life. Did I say last time that the greenhouses were mostly harvested? I take that back – today Pekka produced the final balance:. It’s now -6 – -8. 8211; all artichokes have been harvested but a couple of beds need still to be replanted. Let’s see; we can spread a tarpaulin over the ground to prevent it from freezing. And I must say I admire the broad-leaved thyme – it’s still flowering! This entry was posted in Yleinen. White ground and black mood. Pre-Christmas party →. I just freeze the...

May 2016 – Northbynorth

https://lyokkila.wordpress.com/2016/05

8211; a way of life. The best laid plans. Had you asked me a week ago what we were going to do around Mothers’ Day, I would have confidently told you that – in addition to having on Sunday lunch with the extended family in a newly-opened restaurant – we would plant garlic and onion sets, sow lettuce, re-plant Jerusalem artichoke, transplant this, that and the other…. This time also two largish ide and a decent (600 g) perch). And, time-consumingly, unravelling. This is what a school of bream does to a net.

August 2016 – Northbynorth

https://lyokkila.wordpress.com/2016/08

8211; a way of life. What one learns in life – or what one should learn in life – is never to say, “Do your worst! 8221; to weather – it might take you at your word. In my case, the wind was pleasant – and it was warm! 8211; as it kept the elk flies at bay; and there was a lot of delicious wetland chanterelles. A tiny part of the harvest. After some quick (and frustrated) actions the pot tomatoes from outdoors are either in the smallest greenhouse (and the heating there on) or indoors. As the last gestur...

Tales from a Sea Journey - Tales From a Sea Journey

Tales from a Sea Journey. In November 2009, 8 members of NIE embarked on a journey across the Atlantic. They boarded the Fort St. Louis in Le Havre, and sailed for 7,5 days to Point à Pitre. It was an exciting journey, sometimes uncomfortable, challenging and even boring, but always inspiring. Each passenger came on board carrying 3 stories and 3 songs.

Tales from a Sears House

Tales from a Sears House. Monday, May 11, 2015. The horseshoe crabs are back. And so am I. But my disappearance and reappearance, unlike that of the horseshoe crabs which is driven by an annual biological cycle millions of years old, was driven by an unrelentingly bitter cold winter, by spending my days in a lifeless office with no windows to let life shine in, and, probably most of all, by a chaotic workplace with a leader whose priorities shift daily. This weekend, when I took Jodie out to the beach at...

Well here is the thing, I have decided to stop my blog. Back in June, I began feeling like blogging was becoming a bit of a chore. I had never felt that way about it before but life is always changing and evolving and what worked 6 months ago or a year ago, sometimes doesn't fit into the mix as easily or as enjoyable as it once did.
