Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera. LRO is currently in the Extended Mission phase. Focused on collecting the data needed to address key lunar science questions, including:. Investigate volatile sources, sinks and transfer mechanisms with emphasis on the lunar polar regions, including permanently shadowed regions (PSRs). Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera. What is the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO)? The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) is a spacecraft built by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (or NASA) to study the Moon, that launched in 2009. It carries seven science instruments including: several cameras, an altimeter to measure topography, a detector to measure cosmic radiation, and several instruments to record the presence of water ice at the lunar poles.
