Saving The First $100,000. The Hardest? July 20, 2016. The First $100,000. In our May update. We mentioned the possibility of breaking $100,000 in June. It seemed surreal, but definitely possible. Cheers to Amber Tree Leaves. Would it not be great to reach 100K while enjoying a holiday. I hope you reach that milestone. This comment blew my mind. As soon as I read that comment, I wanted it to happen. I wanted to prove that amazing things can happen while taking a rest on a moving sidewalk. I’ve read...

Plan early. Invest smartly. Escape from the rat race. I Don’t Believe in Work-Life Balance. November 20, 2016. I’m the poster child for work-life balance at my company. It’s great: I work a reduced schedule and my department and company gets to say things like “we support working mothers” and “we care about the work-life balance of our employees”. 8221; I’m pretty certain he didn’t ask anyone else in my department the same question, but then I am the poster child! But why does that rub me the wrong way?

The motorbike I found parked in my Guatemalan hotel lobby; here in the Moroccan desert. In March 2014 I was spending the month in Antigua, Guatemala, where they will kill you for your shoes. And so I wasn’t about to let this opportunity pass. That evening I dragged him out to dinner at Sobremesa. He is also a novelist with several books to his credit, but that’s another story.

Saying goodbye to the 9 to 5. November 2016: Our Money Went Where? December 1, 2016. Our money went where? We’ve been doing so well relatively speaking from the rest of the year. Positives: Where we did well. Let’s concentrate on the positives and good sides of the spending first. Hmmm, positives, where are the positives? Utilities are lower because we haven’t had to run the heat yet, and have only turned on the AC a couple of times to de-humidify the house. Yeah! Not too bad, not too good…. Now, for sho...

Goodbye Quinn - Slowly Sipping Coffee

Saying goodbye to the 9 to 5. January 10, 2017. Lots of questions; questions you don’t really get to make with people. If she was a person, she’d be in a home, just waiting to die, getting visits from us on the weekends, if we weren’t too busy, but maybe I’m more of a pessimist in that regard. Harley, the crazy quiet dingo. Lola, the new queen of the castle. I’ll just miss her period. She added a lot to the household and was great with the kids, and pretty much, I’ll just miss her. Monthly Archives: April 2015. As I discussed in Managing Your Float. I tend to not rush to pay bills that have no consequences for paying late such as interest or late fees. This includes medical bills. I put paying these off for a couple of reasons. Mainly, I think the cost of health care is insane (in the United States at least) and I try to put off paying them while I can think of a way to reduce the bill. Anything is negotiable when it comes down to it, especially if you feel it was not worth what yo...

For those who follow Mad FIentist. Know that the Health Savings Account (“HSA”) is “ The Ultimate Retirement Account. 8221; I had an old HSA from a previous employer just sitting in an account for years. It would earn a few cents of interest per month and then I’d have to pay a $3 maintenance fee every month since I was no longer employed by the company. After my new HSA was all set up, I rolled over my HSA monies from my old account to consolidate the two and eliminate the old maintenance fee. I’v...
