Occasional Hyker: May 2011
http://occasionalhyker.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html
Monday, May 23, 2011. T-Minus 52 hours and counting. Good evening friends. I apologize for the delay in posting but again, life gets in the way. This is just a quick note before I go on a trip this weekend to the Cranberry Wilderness in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. I'm planning to hike for four days and I cannot be more excited. So, gear. Yes, I have updated nearly all of the gear I had before I returned to backpacking in 2009. My sleeping bag and tent are the only items I have not replaced. For the...

Occasional Hyker: Raccoon Creek State Park, PA Backpacking - Part Two
http://occasionalhyker.blogspot.com/2010/09/raccoon-creek-state-park-pa-backpacking_17.html
Friday, September 17, 2010. Raccoon Creek State Park, PA Backpacking - Part Two. In part one, I had left off with our tired party just arriving at the Pioneer Camp area. Pioneer is located off of the Appaloosa Trail, which is what the Forest Trail is called once it crosses the bridge on Nichol Road. The spur trail for Pioneer leads you into an open area surrounded by different group campsites. Ben Stein in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. In case you didn't get the reference.). One issue, at least, was solved.

Sunday, September 9, 2012. Zaleski Backpacking Trail Revisited. I received an anonymous comment on my post about the Zaleski Backpacking Trail. I originally intended to just reply to the comment, but my reply became longer than intended, so I decided to make a blog post out of it. Here is the comment:. Thank you for commenting. Sorry it took so long in getting your comment posted, things have been hectic at my household lately causing me to neglect my poor blog. The campsites are on the ridge tops, not n...

Occasional Hyker: October 2010
http://occasionalhyker.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html
Thursday, October 21, 2010. Raccoon Creek State Park, PA Backpacking - Appendix A. In my two previous posts about my overnight hike at Raccoon Creek State Park. I mentioned that once we had arrived at the backpacking shelters our evening was fairly uneventful. Well, that was untrue, but the events of that evening had not much to do with my review of RCSP so I felt it only proper to leave them unmentioned until later. Now Ill iterate my misadventures of that evening. Links to this post. I do have a couple...

Occasional Hyker: Raccoon Creek State Park, PA Backpacking - Part One
http://occasionalhyker.blogspot.com/2010/09/raccoon-creek-state-park-pa-backpacking.html
Wednesday, September 15, 2010. Raccoon Creek State Park, PA Backpacking - Part One. In late fall 2009 I had a chance to go backpacking with my sister-in-law, her soon to be husband and my friend W, the former marine. I had been searching around the Internet for some backpacking areas that were closer to me than the Allegheny National Forest and I discovered Raccoon Creek State Park. Near Hookstown, Pennsylvania. I downloaded the map. Finally, on the trail. Props for a job well done! I'll continue the res...

Occasional Hyker: March 2012
http://occasionalhyker.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html
Saturday, March 31, 2012. The other occurrence in my life, the more major of the two, is still on going. My wife had several odd medical incidents last summer starting in mid-June. By September we had learned that my wife had Stage 4 Adenocarcinoma of the Lung. Our lives have been dramatically altered as you can imagine. A 34 year old non-smoker is not supposed to develop lung cancer. Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more! Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Creating Custom GPS Maps.

Thursday, September 30, 2010. Bureaurcracy - A Creeping Menace. One of the pleasures I get from backpacking, or just being in the out-of-doors in general, is the feeling of freedom. To me being away from technology, the interconnectedness of the new world, and the press of society at large allows a burden to be lifted from my shoulders. Out in the wild areas you are beholden to no one. Your schedule is set by the sun and your stomach alone. Links to this post. Friday, September 24, 2010. I can't believe ...

Occasional Hyker: Low Cost Kayak Roof Rack Solution for Naked Roof Cars
http://occasionalhyker.blogspot.com/2011/06/low-cost-kayak-roof-rack-solution-for.html
Friday, June 10, 2011. Low Cost Kayak Roof Rack Solution for Naked Roof Cars. I recently decided that I wanted to be able to carry two kayaks on my car, so that I could easily take a friend or my fiance paddling with me. I considered a lightweight trailer, but ruled them out due to cost and storage hassles. That left a roof rack. I poked around on Amazon, and quickly found that there are knockoffs available - "Universal fit" rack kits. Priced as low as $30. Additionally, there are generic J-cradles.

Occasional Hyker: The Zaleski Backpacking Trail - Beautiful Misery
http://occasionalhyker.blogspot.com/2010/09/zaleski-backpacking-trail-beautiful.html
Friday, September 10, 2010. The Zaleski Backpacking Trail - Beautiful Misery. Thanks to Facebook (a website that I loath, but still get too much benefit from to ditch completely) I was able to reconnect with a college acquaintance whom is an enthusiastic outdoorsman. Through some Facebook messages and some IM conversations I was able to get myself invited to go along on a backpacking trip he was planning. This was to take place in April of 2009. And the MSR Alpine Kitchen Set. Approx). It is located ...
