The Self-Publishing Review

Thursday, 6 January 2011. Here we are in 2011 and in a spirit of optimism, I am making a few changes to The Self-Publishing Review. Regular visitors will have noticed that I've not been posting here much lately. There were two reasons for that: I've been incredibly busy with paid-for writing, which has to take precedence over my blogging activities; and I've been getting so many ugly anonymous comments and emails from this site that I needed to rethink my approach. The Self-Publishing Review: The Darkness: Bill Kirton

http://theselfpublishingreview.blogspot.com/2010/07/darkness-bill-kirton.html

Thursday, 22 July 2010. The Darkness: Bill Kirton. The jumbled and dull back cover copy for The Darkness. Is no indication of the quality of the text of the book itself: I found a lot here to keep me interested, and would like to see what happens to Bill Kirton's work when it is passed through the hands of a competent and demanding editor. Labels: 24 pages read. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). There was an error in this gadget. If you'd like to submit your book for review, send me a message using thi...

The Self-Publishing Review: The Faith Of A Child: Stefan G Lanfer

http://theselfpublishingreview.blogspot.com/2010/08/faith-of-child-stefan-g-lanfer.html

Thursday, 26 August 2010. The Faith Of A Child: Stefan G Lanfer. Playwright Stefan Lanfer has penned a vital new book on the struggles of dads-to-be. According to Lanfer, "When my wife was pregnant, I was STRESSED out, and the guys around me were no help- until, just in time, I hosted a group of dads at our home. I fed them dinner, and they fed me their stories." As he listened, says Lanfer, "I got inside the head space of a dad, and, finally, I felt ready.". The Faith Of A Child. By Toby Barlow, a book ...

The Self-Publishing Review: Where Spirits Live: Omri Navot

http://theselfpublishingreview.blogspot.com/2010/08/where-spirits-live-omri-navot.html

Thursday, 19 August 2010. Where Spirits Live: Omri Navot. I did try to find a cover image to use here, but without any luck: perhaps the author could add one to his own blog. Just a thought. The simplistic tone of this book and its young main character made me wonder at first if it was intended for a younger audience: but its focus on spirituality makes that unlikely and so I'm still not quite sure where this book would be shelved and what its target market is. Labels: 41 pages read. I read it all.

The Self-Publishing Review: Lost in Juarez, by Douglas Lindsay

http://theselfpublishingreview.blogspot.com/2010/10/lost-in-juarez-by-douglas-lindsay.html

Thursday, 28 October 2010. Lost in Juarez, by Douglas Lindsay. From the creator of the cult Barney Thomson crime series, comes a darker, more sinister novel. The government is watching. 4 million names on the DNA database and counting; CCTV cameras on every street corner; telephone records available to any agency which requests them; restrictions on movements around Westminster; ID cards and the most all encompassing surveillance operations ever conducted. All in the name of freedom. It has a good jacket...

The Self-Publishing Review: Moonlight: Keith Knapp

http://theselfpublishingreview.blogspot.com/2010/07/moonlight-keith-knapp.html

Thursday, 15 July 2010. It began with a power outage. A power outage that went beyond lights and televisions. Clocks stopped telling time. Cell phones no longer received signals. Cars became dead relics that wouldn't start. As the world around them becomes darker, so do the inhabitants of the small town of Westmont, Illinois. A mysterious and evil presence has taken a hold over the village, making the once peaceful town a place of violence and despair. And not everyone can remain untouched forever. A few...

Friday, February 26, 2010. Movie Time, Again! Welcome to another installment of GlobalWatchWatch Theater, featuring Laura and Oleg. Brain Turds

http://markssutton.blogspot.com/2009/10/i-try-to-understand-good-storytelling.html

The mental rants of a small indie publisher. Sunday, October 25, 2009. I try to understand good storytelling. What goes into that story, and why. The why is important, and the what takes thought. The Self-Publishing Review. Me, alone, with only myself to rely on? Probably not. I have six agent-rejected novels now, but I’m doing this for my future readers. My next six novels will probably be rejected, and one can hope they won’t be, but the reason won’t be me or my writing. Labels: AAR acredited agents.

Greyling Bay: Helen's List

http://greylingbay.blogspot.com/2009/03/helens-list.html

Friday, March 6, 2009. Meet new people. Not from university. Clubs? THE WRITING OF THE LIST. A woman walks along the seafront, stops and leans over the railings gazing out across the bay. She walks to a bench, picks up a polystyrene chip-tray between her finger and thumb and drops it into a litter-bin (. Keep Greyling Bay Tidy. She pulls a notebook from her raincoat pocket and scribbles as the sky darkens further and spits of rain speckle the concrete. Labels: Author Sally Zigmond. I like this a lot....

Greyling Bay: The Outsider

http://greylingbay.blogspot.com/2009/04/outsider.html

Wednesday, April 8, 2009. Her lip trembles. Seduction is a gentle thing. What he did was nothing like that. Labels: Author Chris Leonard. Now we are to believe that he is some sort of heartless breaker of women. This is a sea change in the make up of Darius. It would be like taking Doug and making him a sophisticated lover of the rich women of Greyling, and putting poetry and philosophy into his mouth, and making him look like Brad Pitt with his shirt off. Sorry, but I must protest at this wrong. BUT, he...

Greyling Bay: Secrets and Burdens

http://greylingbay.blogspot.com/2009/05/secrets-and-burdens.html

Tuesday, May 5, 2009. 8220;You want another job, Louise? 8221; Gwen takes silence for assent. “Two brothers,” she explains. “Malcolm writes text books or something at home; George is helpless, spastic they used to call it. Anyway there’s two days when he doesn’t go to the day centre.”. Chelsee relaxed, eyes half-closed, her breathing regular but Louise knew the girl was greedily sucking the strength from her. What was different this time? Her intuition was never wrong. 8220;So you’ll go then? 8220;Fine&#...

Tuesday, May 19, 2009. 8220;Every time I do something worthwhile, you go and spoil it. Attention seeking, that’s what it is,” Ger hisses. Chelsee blinks. She looks at her wrists. She frowns. “You can’t leave. Mum and Dad need you to help in the caff now the summer’s coming. I can’t do it any more.”. It’s a new strategy, Ger tells himself. The old one won’t work; bring out the next. “What’s wrong with tablets, then? 8221; She’s winning because he has to ask, and he hates himself for asking. Ger flops back...

Greyling Bay: Field Trip

http://greylingbay.blogspot.com/2009/05/field-trip.html

Friday, May 22, 2009. Phyllis watches them as they scatter across the dunes. Darius before them, walking backwards, talking, always talking; each time he turns another child slips away until there is only the skinny girl left, standing beside him, straight as a rod. Field trip, Darius calls it; skiving, Phyllis thinks. Darius stands awkwardly with the skinny girl, staring all around; his reedy voice rises as he calls for them. "Jellybean," he shouts, "Legless! Why do we even need the “e” in “ebook” for most usages? But now that we’ve advanced to the era of the Kindle, Nook, and other e-readers (again, why not “d-reader”?
