The Sparkle Beneath
The piñata overhead, balloons floating in the sky, children’s squeals slicing through the air. It is easy to forget where I am it draws a picture very similar to my own privileged childhood in New York. But the chickens running in the yard, making themselves comfortable in the trees surrounding the house, and the emaciated dogs circling the area for dropped food catch me and reign me in, reminding me exactly where I am. Birthday parties are a big deal here, and those that throw them spare no expense.
