Sunday, May 5, 2013. Making a House a Home. If you haven't heard, we bought a house! It's a 1965 ranch style in a quaint neighborhood. The outside is adorable but the inside left a bit to be desired. Family room looking to front door. Guest bathroom and wall paper. Think we are crazy, yet? One more thing, this was a smokers house. It smelled pretty bad. Through all these things we saw potential. We made an offer and bought the house for a great price! We began work the day after we closed. If you have li...

The Maloneys Baloney: July 2011

http://thismaloneysbaloney.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Friday, July 22, 2011. Yesterday I found this box in my English room. Obviously, I was confused about the purpose of this apron. The Japanese says something about eating healthy. I opened the box and found no apron.but I did find some other materials. And most importantly I found the instruction manual. Let's learn how to use it. First, you need to make sure you have all of the pieces. Then it's time to eat a bowl of rice. After giving enough time for digestion, it's time to push. Now you feel powerful!

The Maloneys Baloney: Disembarkation

Saturday, March 31, 2012. We have dreaded writing this post because it means our time in Japan has come to an end. It is difficult to leave friends, family and a job that pays you to be awesome at English. Watashi wa eigo no kyoushi desu. I am an English teacher.). Or as I like to say. Watashi wa eigo desu. I am English.). Japanese culture is something we will never fully understand, but it has earned our appreciation and respect. You would be hard-pressed to find people so kind and helpful.

Left of the Rising Sun: August 2011

http://leftoftherisingsun.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Left of the Rising Sun. My Life as an Alaskan Bush Teacher. Friday, August 5, 2011. It's amazing how two districts can be so different. So far, I am super impressed by NSBSD. They seem to generally have their act together. More than that though, they aren't so enamored with themselves that they forget to be normal people. That's about it, though. North Slope beats them in every other category. First off, let's just address the money issue. The pay with NSBSD is better, for both salary and added duties.

Left of the Rising Sun. My Life as an Alaskan Bush Teacher. Tuesday, January 8, 2013. That Time We Went to a Ski Resort and Didn't Ski. Greetings from the Far North! I've been trying to fix the layout of this blog, but for some reason I am fighting the system. It could have something to do with the slow slow slow internet. Regardless, I should follow through with my promise to blog more often! Finally, I'm 25 so I can rent an AWESOME car. Someday, I want one of those to keep. The North Slope was literall...

Left of the Rising Sun. My Life as an Alaskan Bush Teacher. Saturday, October 17, 2009. I took a sunset run along the beach towards Siberia, and it was absolutely gorgeous! Running along the Bering Sea facing Russia the whole time was one of the most surreal experiences yet. It's a rare thing, too, because of the usual cold weather. http://leftoftherisingsun.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Left of the Rising Sun. My Life as an Alaskan Bush Teacher. Friday, September 30, 2011. Not much has happened lately. I’m just working much longer days than is probably healthy and stressing out about things I should probably just let go. I left school today and was bombarded by a flock of kids. They had obviously planned this ambush as they were well-armed with piles and piles of snowballs. I tackled a few, ran behind a snow bank, and threw a few hastily packed snowballs of my own. I can’t imagine...

Left of the Rising Sun: Attack of the Teacher

http://leftoftherisingsun.blogspot.com/2011/10/attack-of-teacher.html

Left of the Rising Sun. My Life as an Alaskan Bush Teacher. Tuesday, October 18, 2011. Attack of the Teacher. Parent Teacher Conference days are so long and intense! And for some reason we don’t get a day off like most L48 teachers do to make up for the over-contract time . . . let’s hope we at least get financially compensated. There are occasional rewards to teaching in the bush, though. 5-minute walk back home (take that, Gambell! I spied three of my four girl students walking across the village square.

Left of the Rising Sun. My Life as an Alaskan Bush Teacher. Thursday, January 10, 2013. Our Semi-Annual Trip to the City. Right now, this is our life: we go Outside once a year, and we go to the City twice a year. We went shopping. A lot. But we only get to go shopping twice a year, so don't judge. :). A REAL DATE NIGHT! Dinner and a movie with my sweetheart in our new clothes and new phones and mani/pedi and new shoes and new haircuts . . . and I'm even wearing a city purse. Date night at the movies!

Left of the Rising Sun. My Life as an Alaskan Bush Teacher. Tuesday, May 18, 2010. Our Next Door Neighbor, Siberia. Another school day down, and we are that much closer to the end! On our walk home, we noticed that it was as clear as we've ever seen it in Siberia! Monday, May 17, 2010. I took the day off today! Teachers don’t get enough personal days during the year. I would trade some summer time for a few more days off during the year. We don’t even get federal holidays. Saturday, May 15, 2010. I was p...
