Last Friday night my freshman student Amelia and I took a 7-hour train from Jishou to Loudi (a city in central Hunan) and crashed at her family’s city apartment. The next morning we drove to her countryside home to do some sightseeing- though the drive there was breathtaking in itself. On either side of us, rice paddies and farmland sloped upwards into the Caste mountains that Hunan is famous for. May 15, 2009.

At English Corner on Tuesday the topic was a dry one- “How did you celebrate Tomb Sweeping Day? 8221; I argued that denying a compliment when you think it’s true is false modesty- and if it’s intended to make others. You’re modest, it’s flat out prideful. They sort of agreed, but still laughed and insisted that accepting a compliment is too “direct” and impolite.
