Presidents By The Book: September 2012
http://presidentsbythebook.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html
Presidents By The Book. Reading a book on each of the 44 Presidents. 26: Theodore Roosevelt: The 47%. The contrast between the way politicians spoke 100 years ago compared with now is amazing. There is of course the difference in tone and tenor, in the turn of the century, the art of speaking still mattered and political speeches were expected to be aspirational rather than populist. Even blue collar people generally did not vote purely on "who they'd want to have a beer with". Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Presidents By The Book. Reading a book on each of the 44 Presidents. 28: Woodrow Wilson: Initial Thoughts. OK, so the rumors are true that having a child puts a crimp in your free time. The last time I wrote a post was a little over a year and a half ago, just before our daughter Edith was born. I just finished the biography of Wilson by H W Brands and there were a couple interesting things I observed that I'll expand on in later posts. Wilson was not always the "Wilsonian" internationalist we make him o...

Presidents By The Book: Woodrow Wilson: Iraq III
http://presidentsbythebook.blogspot.com/2014/06/woodrow-wilson-iraq-iii.html
Presidents By The Book. Reading a book on each of the 44 Presidents. Woodrow Wilson: Iraq III. Humans have extremely short memories when it comes to history. If we remembered the circumstances of how many of the countries in the middle east were created, we might be less willing to fight wars to protect those "nations". The exploding situation in Iraq is now capturing everyone's attention and our President and Congress are trying to figure out what we can do to keep Iraq from tearing apart. All of these ...

Presidents By The Book. Reading a book on each of the 44 Presidents. Grover Cleveland: "Waving the bloody shirt". Since the north had won the civil war, the republicans who were predominately from the northeast and midwest. Had made blaming the democrats for the war an integral part of their campaign strategy. Terrorists) and all other democrats as 'weak on terrorism', the republicans of the 1880's continued to imply that voters who elected democrats were somehow disloyal to their country. Realized that ...

Presidents By The Book. Reading a book on each of the 44 Presidents. At a time when we've become so desensitized to the high level corruption and bribery through super Pacs. And lobbyists, it's refreshing to see local level corruption get some national attention. The New York Times on Friday ran an article about pardons. That Haley Barbour, the former governor of Mississippi had given out in his last days in office. It's not like Southern politics have ever been clean, but this should raise the eyebrows ...

Presidents By The Book. Reading a book on each of the 44 Presidents. Woodrow Wilson: The Unitary Executive. This extreme view of the executive prerogative had its origin in Wilson and some of his immediate predecessors. In the period immediately prior to Wilson and TR, the President was considered weaker than congress. Presidential power waxed and waned after them but has been in expansion mode for the last two decades. Wilson lobbied congress to get the United States involved in World War I and eventual...

Presidents By The Book. Reading a book on each of the 44 Presidents. 26: Theodore Roosevelt: Out of Canaan, Into the Promised Land. Theodore Roosevelt was the Vice President to William McKinley and took office after McKinley was assassinated. Like a couple other Vice Presidents in American history, his political party attached him to the presidential ticket as a political dead end where they thought he'd not be able to do any more harm to the party. William McKinley: In his own voice. One of the main arg...

Presidents By The Book. Reading a book on each of the 44 Presidents. Grover Cleveland: The Rise of The Labor and Progressive Movement. Many people don't understand that the founders and their successors valued liberty over equality. Various presidents from George Washington all the way up to Cleveland generally adopted this view and the government was looked upon as something to protect people from more than something to help people. As the depression continued, Cleveland's refusal to implement some kind...
