REVIVAL OF U.S. FOLK DANCE TRADITIONS. Ford believed that traditional dances were beneficial: The old American dancing was clean and healthful. In the square dances and the circle two-step, one finds rhythm and grace of motion, and people are thrown together and have to know one another. The old dances were social. The modern dances are not. UC Squares History: Oakland Days 1973-1989. On April 26, 1973, UC Squares met and danced at Rockridge School’s multipurpose room for the first time. This room was a far cry from Plymouth House. It might easily have accommodated some 16 squares and there was an actual stage for the caller. There was an entire school yard for parking. All of this was provided at no charge!
