Happy Trouble: June 2015
http://happytrbl.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Light reading about parenting a kid on the autism spectrum. Tuesday, June 16, 2015. Two minutes on Tuesday. I didn't watch for two minutes. Ben was happily riding his trike in our front yard. It's fenced in, so I thought he was safe. I filled a batch of ice trays and knelt down to put them carefully in the freezer. I couldn't see out the front window for about two minutes. After a block or so, a woman on a bike hollered (politely) from across the street: "Are you looking for someone? Me, panicky: "Yes!

Happy Trouble: March 2013
http://happytrbl.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Light reading about parenting a kid on the autism spectrum. Sunday, March 31, 2013. Negotiation 101 *warning: contains yucky stuff*. My last post was full of disregard for unproven therapies. I didn't mention that we've been following a gluten free/dairy free diet for about 3 years. We don't buy into the theories, but Ben is definitely sensitive to something. I looked up from the train wreck in Ben's pants to see him with his finger in his mouth. Me, panicky: "Ben! Are you eating something? Autism is in ...

Happy Trouble: Shut my mouth and call me Elvis
http://happytrbl.blogspot.com/2012/06/shut-my-mouth-and-call-me-elvis.html
Light reading about parenting a kid on the autism spectrum. Monday, June 25, 2012. Shut my mouth and call me Elvis. Every once in a while, Ben shocks the bejeezus out of me. He did it again the other night. I started singing a song to him while he took a bath. Me: "OK, no singing.". Me: "You want me to sing a different song? I was a little shocked right there. He's never really shown any sign that he was paying attention to what I was singing. I started singing the crawdad song. Finished it. And again.

Light reading about parenting a kid on the autism spectrum. Thursday, June 6, 2013. Lots of stories to tell. Sometimes I feel like autism is everywhere I look. I talk to parents, teachers, therapists, and doctors about autism. It fills my Facebook feed, podcast feed, e-mail, and a good portion of my thoughts. I am a little pleased that only about half of what I read is autism-related. To interact with the other kids. He was listening to them and occasionally interjecting things, even if his voice was...

Happy Trouble: May 2013
http://happytrbl.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
Light reading about parenting a kid on the autism spectrum. Friday, May 24, 2013. Milestone: 6 years old. Put the permanent marker down, Bubba. We had a birthday party for Ben this past weekend. It was different from most kids' parties - there weren't a lot of friends his age, for instance. There were lots of people who care about him though, and he had a really good time. There was cake ( GFCF. And he liked his presents and there were no meltdowns. Almost gave me a heart attack. Links to this post.

Happy Trouble: April 2013
http://happytrbl.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
Light reading about parenting a kid on the autism spectrum. Monday, April 29, 2013. Thunder in the mountains. Ben has been making lots of speech progress lately. Every day or two, he says something new that surprises us and represents a forward stride. Here are some examples:. Daddy, who's car is this? Daddy, I love you too.". What are you making? If he's said a clear, relevant interrogative like that a year ago, I'd have had a heart attack. To warn people below. Ben kept stopping (I swear) every two fee...

Happy Trouble: September 2013
http://happytrbl.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Light reading about parenting a kid on the autism spectrum. Thursday, September 26, 2013. This morning, getting ready for SCHOOL! I've been running silent for a while. After two years in a school just for kids with autism, Ben started in. A classroom alongside typical kids about 3 weeks ago. I wasn't sure how it was going to go, so I didn't want to talk about it. Check out the other planets. If we want to plan ahead as a species, we need to get out there.". We can cover this.". Things went surprisingly w...
