Robert Price Rifkin: February 2014

Wednesday, February 26, 2014. A few years back I wrote a short story called Interrogation. At the time the story raised a bit of controversy for its depiction of a faceless man who is subjected to a heightened interrogation by representatives of a nameless state authority. I am reprinting the story here in two parts. It still seems pretty relevant. 8220;If you’ve done nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear.”. The set-up was simple, the kind Neibur was used to in his hometown operations where these sorts...

Friday, December 13, 2013. STOCKMAN AND THE TRICKLE. I just came across a fascinating new book by David A. Stockman, who used to be Ronald Reagan’s director of the budget. Stockman is the man many hold responsible for Reagan’s adaptation of supply-side economics (trickle down economics that held that if the rich get richer, they’ll have so much, it’ll fall down to the poor and raise everyone’s ship). Don’t read this book if you want to keep your cool. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Robert Price Rifkin was b...

A Writer is someone who gets all the girls/boys to pay attention because people think he/she is really smart and talented and really cool to be around. A writer is someone who works a few hours a day, takes care of a lot of things around the house whenever he/she feels like it. A writer is someone who can deal with excess because excess i...

Friend: Do you think you have the qualities and qualifications needed to seek the highest office in the land? Candidate: I have lots of skills. Candi...

Friday, August 29, 2014. WHY I KEEP WRITING FICTION. So I continue to write, after years and years of effort and pleasure and frustration. But do I write because it’s easier to get my work to readers? The main reason I continue to wrestle with plots and characterizations and sentences that just won’t bend to my demands, is that I have no choice. That’s why I do it, too. I have no choice. Thursday, August 28, 2014. How long does it take to write a novel? If you ask two or three writers how long it took th...

Monday, September 30, 2013. New Short Story "In Repose", part one. The following is the first part of a new short story:. In Repose, PART ONE. 8220;Get your hands off me,” Francie said to Sam. It was morning and time to get to work, past time. Sam worked as a salesman for a lumber company in New Jersey and the trip in from the Bronx, with traffic, would take that much longer today because he had procrastinated an extra twenty minutes trying to get Francie to return his affections. He snatched his briefca...

Monday, March 31, 2014. Maybe It’s Time to Limit Presidential Terms. Being president of the United States is a lot like being the neighborhood used car salesman. You may be very good at what you do; you may have graduated from the Senate or the State house with all kinds of experience and knowledge and friends; you may be wildly popular at the time of the election. We let our Chief Execs hangs around long past their sell-by dates and that’s no one’s fault but our own, because we could change ...Maybe It&...

Thursday, October 31, 2013. Short stories–a category of fiction that enjoys a wide swing of popularity, from serious, seminal and celebrated to ignored, belittled and diminished. Pick a year or a decade or even a century and you can usually measure the cultural temperature but the place that short stories occupy on the literary landscape. Where are we now? The sense of a readership is present from the moment the writer presses the post button on a site. And feedback is often available almost immediat...

Friday, November 8, 2013. Why I Write Short Stories. Why do I spend a month or two working on a short story? I’m a fairly fast first draft writer–I can do a first draft of a short story that’s mostly. After about two weeks. But at that point, I’m far from ready to send that little nugget of ideas, dialogue and plot out into a mostly unwelcoming world. And this is the marvelous thing about the short story; the thing that thrills and moves me about the form. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
