Westsail 321

Thursday, June 27, 2013. Ucluelet B.C. to Coos Bay. We've been hiding out at the Charleston Marina near Coos Bay after a multi-day passage from Canada. Highlights included some night time visits from Dall porpoises. They created some spectacular comet trails of phosphorescence as they swam alongside the boat. We also had an unsettling visit from a Minke whale one early morning as our favorable winds finally died. He (she? As soon as the winds turn northerly again we plan to continue south. Westsail 321: May 2013

http://westsail321.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, May 4, 2013. Leaving Alaska, or Tinker, Tailor, Otter, Spy. A few days ago we officially crossed into Canadian waters and it truly feels like another country. We are warmer, there are song birds on the shore (including my favorites: winter wren, hermit thrush, and varied thrush), and the deciduous trees are starting to show their leaves. Quite a marked contrast from our past few weeks up north. Alaska did not let us go easily. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Westsail 32, Hull #321.

Thursday, January 5, 2012. Powdery Accumulations: A Primer on the Poetics of NOAA Forecasts. Wecantu's 'cocoon' keeps her cozy in all weather. I love reading the text weather forecasts from NOAA. And on occasion I stumble across a gem of a sentence that wonderfully describes the poetic side of a weather event. ". Powdery snow will accumulate quickly. Is a recent example. The adjectives 'powdery' and 'quickly' conjure up some heavenly images in my skier's mind. WINDSOUTH TO SOUTHEAST WIND 25 TO 35 MPH WIT...

Monday, December 31, 2012. The Magic Bunny visits Wecantu. And now he won't leave. This is the sight that greeted us after returning from our week spent visiting family and friends in the Seattle area. Juneau often feels a bit surreal to me, and with all the darkness and snow and ice I feel like I am living in the world of Peter Hoeg's novel Smilla's Sense of Snow. Saturday, December 8, 2012. I blame Matt entirely. Site, and the Vendee Globe. A trio of beheaded Pandalus platyceros. One of the benefits to...

Wednesday, May 23, 2012. The Grid and other happenings. Not much of note has been happening of late, but here's a few things that may or may not be worth mentioning. You cannot see this detail in the photographs, but there are several lines tying her to the pilings, plus a halyard from the mast down to a railing for good measure. The trick is keeping these lines adjusted as the water level changes. Other items of note:. Never mind all that oil leaking out. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Follow us by Email.

Monday, March 25, 2013. Working on the storm tri-sail. We are getting very close to departing Juneau. A few weeks ago we had access to a hangar which gave us ample room to sew the larger sections of our new sail. (Thanks Bob! The sail is now one finished project, and others have been getting checked off our list too. Monday, March 4, 2013. The hatch project, half way done. The hard dodger, temporarily removed.
