Raining cats and dogs here today though on the plus side its blowing a strong easterly wind. A sorry looking and very bedraggled first summer Hobby. Was on a post at Newpark and obligingly stayed long enough for Brian to get there and see it too. First decent migrant in a while. Not sure what these three were finding to eat on beenies boathouse at Skaw! Was in the Vevoe/West loch area today, perhaps not the rarest but a first for the year and any migrant in July is very welcome. A female Red backed Shrike.

a short history

A short history ]. A short history of Whalsays birdwatchers past and present. Johnnie Simpson (1917 - 1976). Simpson at the Snowy Owls nest on Fetlar in about 1970. (photo by Bobby Tulloch). Johnnie was one of only a small band of birdwatchers in the 60s and 70s, (he had become interested through his uncle Sammy Bruce) and found many rare birds including Britain's fourth Dusky Thrush and perhaps most notably Europe (and Shetlands) second Thick Billed Warbler. A Tale of 2 Halves. Tales of travel and birds from Cheshire to Shetland and back, with a bit of other stuff in between. Monday, 15 October 2012. Save The Best Till Last. October 5th and it was time for my return to Shetland for 8 days. The days prior to my visit had seen a good fall of birds throughout Shetland with Whalsay alone hosting Blyth's Reed Warbler, Lanceolated Warbler and Red-flanked Bluetail, all caught so would have made very welcome ringing ticks. Maybe next year? Fair Isle Bird Sightings.

A slight detour on the way home for the (elusive) Pallas's Warbler at Knott End-on-Sea was a fitting way to round off a tiring but enjoyable day. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A Tale of 2 Halves. Tales of travel and birds from Cheshire to Shetland and back, with a bit of other stuff in between. Saturday, 28 April 2012. Sunday, 22 April 2012. Up S* t Crake? After setting various nets on Friday evening i set off for Woolston at 3.45am meeting Kieran at 4.15am. Once on the bed we went our separate ways opening nets at opposite ends of no.3 bed. A Tale of 2 Halves. Tales of travel and birds from Cheshire to Shetland and back, with a bit of other stuff in between. Monday, 9 July 2012. No bird related news to talk of with the miserable weather continuing, so i will have to be content with my latest visit to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix! Like last year i was fortunate enough to hang out in the GP2/GP3 paddock with Arden International. A very happy Luiz Razia retuning to the paddock after his sprint race victory on Sunday. More to come fro...
