Saanich Rd, Saanichton. This pub dates back to 1859, and was a popular stop on the old rail line that ran from Victoria to Sidney. I lived a stone's throw from here for many years. I got to enjoy one of my favourite beers: a Lions Winter Ale. From Granville Island Brewing. I love that hint of vanilla! Turns out to be true.

I hope these pictures do it justice. From the outside it appears to suffer from Hipsteritis. But once you step inside, the chill-out beats from the DJ warmly suck you in like that feeling you get when you slip into a warm bath. Here's Becca checking out the guitar on the bed. Saturday, December 10, 2011. 85 Mathers, 1 Queensferry Street, Edinburgh. Linus and I embarked on a mini crawl of some West End pubs. Our first stop was Mathers No. 1 near the intersection that Linus calls "Edinburgh's Times Square.". This proclivity to bar-block is a strange custom given there is no table service at the pubs and all orders must be placed with the bartender.

The first thing you see upon entering this brewery of "beer for punks" is the following list of omissions:. How can you not love these guys? I suspect these Nos. Are a warning shot across the bow of any unsuspecting Lager Boys and their accompanying Labia Brigade that may inadvertently stumble over from next door.

Tuesday, October 18, 2011. 41 The 78, 10-14 Kelvinhaugh Street, Glasgow. What a treat: an entirely vegan pub with a friendly, warm interior. It was full, too. Meghan and I couldn't help but wonder why there isn't a place like this in Victoria. Did you know that (according to Lonely Planet) about 9% of people in the UK identify as vegetarian/vegan? Roughly half that of Canada.

Saturday, January 21, 2012. 119 The Golf Tavern, 30-31 Wrights Houses, Edinburgh. The oldest golf pub in the world, at the site of where golf was originally played (Brunstfield Links), this place is a total gem. Isn't it cute? Here I am enjoying a half-pint of A Man's A Man Light Ale. 60/-, 3.4% abv, "for honest men", from Caledonian Brewery. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

I finally got the chance to see one of my all-time favourite bands: New Order. Usher Hall is a beautiful venue. They removed all the seats from the orchestra level, which is where we were standing with all the other folks who went nuts as the Mancunians belted out a stream of hits including Bizarre Love Triangle.

Wednesday, November 23, 2011. 70 The Alexander Graham Bell, 128 George St, Edinburgh. Too big and fancy to be just a pub, Alexander Graham Bell's is a huge bar with a good selection of real ales.
