Despite my affinity for octopus, it’s not something I buy very often (sadly, because it’s not all that easy to find). Usually stick to squid (caught right here off the shores of Long Island, NY), as it’s more readily available. Where are all the octopus? The baby octopus are sold in two-pound frozen blocks ($6.99 per pound here). 2 lbs baby octopus. 4 cloves garlic, smashed.

Today, I went a different route. I really enjoy a good bowl of soup. Just about any kind of soup. However, when it’s 90F outside, you’re probably not thinking, ‘oh, a warm comforting bowl of soup will hit the spot.’. But, how about a chilled. I like the smoky mussels. I have an abundance of dill in my herb garden right now, and truth be told, I liked this as much as basil pesto, if not better. This was GREAT w/ potatoes and green beans, and the next day, I mixed some in with plain yogurt to make an amazing dip. I have been adding in a squeeze of fresh lemon juice lately to all my pestos. 1 tbsp lemon juice.

Thursday, August 6, 2015. Sour Cherry Coffee Cake. How come I never had a sour cherry before? Because I have lived a sheltered life here in NJ, not realizing that sour cherries are grown right here! The last 2 weeks I have seen these smaller cherries at the market, and was told they have a short season. What doesn't grow here in the Garden State? Get these little cuties while they last. They are tarter than regular cherries, juicier and I love them. I always choose bitter over sweet (except for people).

I usually get about 9 total, 2 for me, and 7 for the squirrels and birds. Oh well. But for some reason, our Turkey Fig tree (in a pot, btw), put out about 20 beautiful figs, ALL FOR ME! I made a few salads as you know; ate some with cheese; but saved a few for a galette, and mixed in some Black Mission figs from the farmers market, which should be available to you now.

This time, I added 2 ears of sweet Jersey corn to the mixture, and boy was it good! I used a store bought pie shell, because I had one in the freezer. You can add bacon or not, but bacon makes everything better. Cherry Tomato and Corn Tart:. 1 9" pie shell. 1 cup of cherry tomatoes (I used yellow and red). 2 ears of fresh corn, shucked. 3/4 cup of whole milk. The best of summer.
