Gianni Berengo Gardin Project. Gianni Berengo Gardin Project. My second Photographic Jazz project is inspired by my love for the cinema and for black and white photography. In 2005 I worked on the images produced by the Magnum photographer, Elliott Erwitt. Part of whose fame was due to the irony present in some of his photos. Eight particularly original and diverse photos by Erwitt had inspired as many compositions, which were recorded with my British quintet. Tommaso Starace 2002 - 2016.

Tommaso Starace quartet plus special guests. Aug 2006 By Ian Carr (Jazz Author). This is an extremely promising debut album. This is an extremely promising debut album. Starace plays alto and soprano saxes and his quartet is a superb unit, with pianist Tim Lapthorn, bassist Andy Hamill and drummer Ben Reynolds. The five guests too, shine brightly and they are trumpeter Joe Aukland, guitarist Anthony Ormesher, vocalist and pianist Eriko Ishihara, saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and flautist Gareth Lockrane.

So, if the pictures of Erwiit are an inspiration then it serves the purpose to the maximum. This ensemble has a quality that even the most able eared listener will enjoy. I heartily recommend it.

The music is played in a Bebop/Hardbop style showcasing some fine solo performances not only from Starace but from the other members of the band. The program opens up with the tune Keep Moving Please! Goodbyes" finds Starace on soprano weaving his mastery of the instrument through some delicious melodies accompanied by Beaujolais on the vibes in one of my favorite cuts on this album.
