900 miles: Chimney Tops Trail
http://900-miles.blogspot.com/2009/12/chimney-tops-trail.html
Thursday, December 24, 2009. Sarah and I hiked this trail on our 20th anniversary weekend. We'd always wanted to do this trail, but it's not recommended for small kids because it's a VERY strenuous trail (straight up) and because the rock outcrop at the top of the trail is dangerous. So our anniversary weekend when we were all alone was the perfect time to tackle it. As you come around a corner on the ridge you can see the Chimney Tops in the distance. It's a pretty imposing formation. After the hike Sar...

It's a glorious time of the year for hiking and I took full advantage yesterday. I had been to Brushy Mountain twice before, but both times had come up the Trillium Gap trail which comes up from Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. Brushy Mountain trail starts in Porters Flats, out at the end of the Greenbrier Road, a mile along the Porters Creek trail. Where you can see them all. Once yo...

900 miles: Cooper Road Trail
http://900-miles.blogspot.com/2013/01/cooper-road-trail.html
Monday, January 21, 2013. New Miles Completed: 5.7. Total Miles Hiked: 13. 1 If a trail has a name like "Wet Bottoms," there's probably a reason. 2 Planning to hike a trail named "Wet Bottoms" a mere day or two after a week-long torrential downpour shows poor judgement. It's a beautiful day, and it's a holiday so I'm not at work. What else would I be doing other than hiking? Once the sun started to peek over the ridge it lit up the western end of the cove spectacularly. From Abrams Creek campground to th...

I had actually intended to do it as an overnight backpacking trip, but decided on the spur of the moment to make a day-hike out of it on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Anthony Creek Trailhead @ Cades Cove picnic area. I have to start out by saying one thing about this loop - there are a LOT of ROCKS on these trails! Anthony Creek - Russell Field trail junction. I took the ...

It was nearly dark when I arrived so I put up my tent, gathered some firewood and got a nice fire going before cooking dinner. I spent a wo...
